What was the point of the Great Gazoo on the show?? It seems VERY out of place in The Flintstones because it's like some kind of "fantasy sequence" that would come on the Jetsons maybe.

Is the concept of the Great Gazoo supposed to mean something...meaning, is there some kind of subcontext or symbolism in his existence?

They were in their last year, and I think they were just running out of stories, so bringing in the Great Gazoo gave them some new story material. I agree with you -- the whole idea just seems very out of place on "The Flintstones".

Well let's face it, like someone else mentioned on another thread here, the last few years of the Flintstones flawed in comparison of the first few years, as far as funny stories, voices and even the drawings of the characters.

Then again, as far as stories go, they were only allowed to get away with so much back then in a more conservative time.

Gee, am I the only one who thought the Great Gazoo was a cool character? He was the one adult male character in the show who had his act together!

I enjioyed him quite a lot (even though he was an extreterrestrial, but that was suppoed to be the idea).

He was cocreated,at least, by Joanna Lee, who wrote many HB shows such as this one (and possiby HUCK FINN),and outisde,GIDGET and BRADY doing somehwat Meg Cabot-ish storiers, and WALTONSW following Earl Hamner Jr's (who worked at HB/Paramount's CHARLOTTES WEB) and was versatile enough for GILLIGAN and GIDGET and BRADY to do Slapstick.(apologies for tyops.)

Harvey Korman (who appeared at my school, at my HIGH school,mind you was the voice as most know of the Great Gazoo. He sounds like a British verison of Frank Nelson who was in ealry episodes.

The credits from the first were used for all 1965-1966 CN episode reruns.

A take off MY FAVOURITE MARTIAN (1963-1966,ABC TV)(Ironically not by Screen gems,their sister, but by Jack Chertok productions, and which Filmation did in 1973 as a toon.)

The last two seasons reflected the TV sitcoms of that time,mainly by placing Fred and Barney in some whacky situations.The Great Gazoo was a perfect example of this.Another fine example,was the Flintstones'and Rubbles'new neighbors the Gruesomes,who were apparently a take off of either the Munsters or the Addams Family,or both.There was even an episode where Samantha and Darrin Stevens appeared in cartoon form.And in fact,Hanna Barbera was responsible for the openning cartoon sequences of Bewitched.

It did give Harvey Korman something to do since Carol Burnett was still a couple of years on the horizon.

Those were the LAST episodes to get to Saturday Morning/daytime syndication...Screen Gems, the parent company when the show was made (though no longer by the show's end), and the syndicator through the 1980s-early 90s, WITHELD the little green sassy British alien's antics till 1970-71...guess THEY thought that the character stunk, TOO! I posted on Internet Movie Database on the Flintstones board On this! I really don't remember "No Biz Like Show Biz" or some other final season ones rerun in daytime till the 1970s,either!

As you can probably tell I also think The Great Gazoo is a great character and the stories with him in them were quite funny in my opinion.
