I Love Lucy is officially off the air... - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I checked in with Hallmark's schedule for next week, and there is no showing of I Love Lucy. The timeslot that it took at 2:30 am has now been replaced by paid programming, and this goes to prove that it wasn't getting enough viewers. Now, one of the funniest and most historical shows is off the air, but for how long, remains a mystery.

I am not only upset at this, but I am also suspicious of what these people are actually doing. Are they selling out to the newer generation, or are they ignoring us? These days, television is swamped with endless reality shows, paid programming, and pointless marathons of programs that weren't that good to begin with. I find that browsing the Internet is much more entertaining than sitting in front of the Tube all day. Go High Definition my ass, that's all people care about. It's more about getting prestine High Definition for the Super Bowl than it is about choosing a variety of shows that are actually interesting. So while we goof around and party like idiots while sinking in debt, we have neglected to showcase the impact of what shows like I Love Lucy and Andy Griffith have given us.

Last month marked the 20th Anniversary of Lucille Ball's Death, and guess what America, you mostly forgot about it. There was no article, no mention of her anywhere on that date. It's a sad reminder of how we have declined in the past decade or so, while we toy ourselves around with endless amounts of stupidity. A real shame, and because I Love Lucy has been on the air since 1951, that record may soon snap.

I can't believe it will be taken off the air permanently. If so, it will be the first time that the show has not been on the air in the US since it originally aired...

I guess it has/had to happen sometime. I've noticed that many people have turned away from I Love Lucy in the past few years because they think that it's not offering anything new. But I think a large part of this is because of the DVD releases, if I Love Lucy wasn't released, then it would probably still be shown in marathons. My local stations have dropped the show quite some time ago and I can't see any other 'classic' show that would even be in these timeslots anymore. Leave it to Beaver and the Brady Bunch were recently pulled from TV Land, so I figured that they are taking away all the family friendly sitcoms that we've come to know and cherish. Black & White TV shows will soon be gone from the airwaves, and more people these days would rather watch something in prestine, High Definition. The only station that you can still see Black & White footage commonly is Turner Classic Movies, and that is because they know what they are doing.

As I said before, I enjoy a big variety, spanning from the classics to the shows that my generation liked. But for me, it's really hard to let go of I Love Lucy, simply because it was special and top quality. That's why I'm upset that you can't find it anywhere anymore. I guess this is farewell, unless someone decides to think up a station with the same format as Turner Classic Movies.

The show is still on locally here in Northwest Ohio, though in edited form. I just think that everyone became spoiled to have it on a national cable channel while before TBS and TV Land, Nick at Nite and the Hallmark, local is how ILL was shown.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, if Hallmark treats "Lucy" the way it was, then I'm glad to see it off the line-up. Every week to have the channel move its schedule around is not a reflection on ILL or Golden Girls or Cheers or anything else they air, it's a reflection of the piss-poor management of the channel. Either they need a programming manager to make a schedule and stick with it, or they need to drop the channel all the way around and go back to making greeting cards only!

More and more people own the DVDs and I'm sure plenty of folks simply taped the episodes as well (and did their own DVDs). It's not Lucy is permanently locked away in a vault never to be presented again. There are some shows from the 50s that will be lost forever because the masters were not properly cared for and never received proper syndication/DVD deals. I Love Lucy will be preserved for all time...others unfortunately won't. (You can name a whole slew of them--Our Miss Brooks, Ann Sothern, Gale Storm, I Married Joan, etc).

"Thank goodness for the DVDs!" is all I can say. I'd be going crazy right now if I didn't have my DVD collection. I Love Lucy is currently being shown where I live locally too which is unusual because we hardly ever get older shows.

I wonder if the locals figure on that if a show is on cable all the time, it has no value in the local market. Why show something people can get all the time on a national scale? Course that hasn't stop my local CW from picking up Married with Children which is on TBS, TV Land, Spike, etc.

I've been fallowing the show on Halmark this past year and I've been noticing them taking it off and putting it on again.

Maybe another channel will pick it up again.

Not true. I Love Lucy is on in L.A. twice a day during weekdays from noon to 1:00 on KCOP, and 5-6 PM on Saturdays and Sundays on KTTV.

That is a reflection of how television is today in general. As I said already, I just wonder if cable is even worth looking into anymore. I have a High Definition Television that can view sports games in excellent quality, but that is all I use it for. Otherwise, I just turn it off and let other people in my family use it. Just look at MTV and VH1. They are horrible, and none of their content is anything related to what they're supposed to broadcast. As for Hallmark, it's becoming just like every 'other' channel. Bland, boring, and dull. Plus, it seems that we're riddled with infomercials that talk more about health care and retirement plans than anything else.

I've only just discovered I Love Lucy last year after some 15+ years of not knowing of it's existance. I just, I just find it hard to let go of this classic show. Even if people just say it's much too old to be continuing on, I will still cherish it because I believe that everyone involved in I Love Lucy was special. As far as I know, there is a Lucy/Desi museum in Jamestown, a Lucy store in Universal Studios Florida, an online Lucy shopping area (www.lucystore.com), a Lucy exhibit in Universal Studios Hollywood, and a few Lucy impersonators scattered throughout the country. It doesn't matter where you're from, when you were born, or what nationality you are. Anybody can enjoy I Love Lucy, and I feel thankful that I found this forum among others to share my thoughts about it.

It's a definite favorite of mine, and I tend to get a little defensive if I feel that I Love Lucy is being mistreated. That's why I written this post to post my opinion, because I just love it that much.
