Default Adalian : Big Bang Theory The Next Blockbuster Hit and Successor To 2.5 Men

Noted TV writer Josef Adalian, formerly of Variety and TV Week and now writing for The Wrap, came out with his top shows everyone will be talking about this TV season. He thinks The Big Bang Theory is about to become a huge, blockbuster hit, and is being groomed to be the successor to Two and a Half Men as CBS's # 1 comedy. Here is is comments on The Big Bang Theory :

Quote:
THE BIG BANG THEORY
CBS
Returns Sept. 21 at 9:30 p.m.

The buzz around "Bang" is that this is the year it'll really break through -- not just as a hit but as blockbuster.

CBS is clearly grooming Chuck Lorre's nerd-com as the eventual successor to Lorre's other series, "Two and a Half Men." The network has moved "Bang" to 9:30 p.m. Mondays -- right behind "Men" -- and has been relentlessly promoting and marketing the show as the Next Great Sitcom Hope.

It's not all hype.

CBS began airing repeats of "Bang" behind "Men" over the summer, and "Bang" has impressed executives at the network by actually building on its lead-in.

"Bang" is also something unusual for a CBS series: a critical darling. This summer, the TV Critics Assn. overlooked usual faves such as "30 Rock" and "The Office" to name "Bang" TV's best half-hour.

It's that combination of wide commercial appeal and media buzz that could make season three the year "Bang" explodes.

That's Perfect. In Fact, i see in about 3 years or maybe evan more, The Big Bang Theory will take the 9:00 Moday Night Timeslot, such as how 2.5 men tock it from raymond. In Fact, if it keeps building on 2.5 men, it will become the #1 Comedy On TV!

There's been a theory floating around since the move that CBS is grooming BBT to move to Wednesdays next season. I could actually see that happening - CBS is trying to groom BBT to be just as big a hit as Men, and once it's found it's own dominant audience, CBS would move it to Wednesday to get a comedy block off the ground there.

Meanwhile, they have Old Christine and Gary Unmarried airing there to "hold down the fort." I could definitely see it happening - either that, or BBT will move into the 9pm timeslot on Mondays with Men being moved to Wednesdays for its last couple of seasons. CBS has a lot of options when it comes to their comedies

I would have agreed with BBT moving to Wednesdays before I saw the summer ratings. If BBT can keep holding and/or building on Men's 18-49 year old ratings (and this a big IF) then I don't think they can move it off Mondays in the 9:00 hour. Otherwise, it would be a waste of time, because if it goes to Wednesdays or back to Mondays at 8:00 it would drop back down. Why build the show up just to knock it back down ? The 8:00 time slot on Mondays or Wednesdays has a ceiling of about 10 million viewers. It just would be a dumb move to build BBT into this huge hit to just knock it back down. I really could see Men moving to Wednesday for its final two seasons, and BBT taking over Mondays at 9:00.

I completely agree - now at 9:30, BBT should remain in the hour for awhile. Like you said, no need to build it up then take it down again. But, I wouldn't rule out CBS for wanting to try it.

I do think Men going to Wednesdays is reasonable. If BBT is strong enough to take over 9pm, which it probably will be in a year, then Men should be able to support and lead-off another night of comedy before it ends.

Yea I think 2 1/2 Men moving to Wednesdays sounds better. BBT is being groomed for the Monday at 9 slot. Mondays has always been CBS's one great comedy night going all the way back to I Love Lucy. BBT has many years left and it's just starting to really break out. I think if they move Men to Wednesdays next year maybe, it would definately help build a comedy block. If it failed then Men could always move back. It's been on a lot longer and doesn't have as many seasons left anyway. The only problem is that I don't think Men is really an 8:00 show.

Yeah, that would be the main problem. I wonder if CBS would ever consider branching out Wednesday comedies to 2 hours in the near future. That way, Men could move to 9pm on Wednesdays. They could use new comedies and/or Old Christine, Rules of Engagement to fill up the other slots.

Still, since Men still has gas in the tank, they should use it to the best of their abilities. Jumpstarting Wednesdays with it is a good idea.

I think the most revealing thing is Josef Adalian saying how CBS is grooming BBT as the successor to Men, and how the CBS executives were impressed with its building on Men this summer. Josef Adalian is one of those "in the know" people. He always has had inside network sources going back to his Variety days.

If they can make BBT strong enough it would just be so counter productive to move it to Wednesdays. No matter how well it does at 9:30 on Monday it would probably still have about a 10 million viewer ceiling on Wednesdays at 8:00. I really think it would be much wiser to mess around with Men in its final two seasons then with BBT, which is being groomed to be the featured sitcom for the next several years. If BBT can continue its great summer run during the fall I think the Monday 9:00 or 9:30 time slot will be a very valuable place to keep BBT. I could see it being there for years to come.

I think any show should be moved it's the stronger ones. I do think BBT is a strong show, but let it get a built in audience. Moving it could kill it in the wrong time slot. It's happened to many a show that was building an audience

I could definitley see "Bang" moving to Monday's at 9 in the near future, and eventually used to build another hit! CBS has the most b*lls when it comes to the multi-cam format than any other network. They know it takes time to let a show grow, and that's what they've let naturally occur with The Big Bang Theory! FOX would've cancelled this amazing show way before the end of last years writer's strike if it'd been on their network, and NBC would've too!
