This is certainly one of the most entertaining episodes, with lots of fun stuff to watch!

It's been commented on before but here, Maryann can sing and in "The Second Ginger Grant" she can't. It would have made for better consistency to have her at least be able to sing in that episode but perhaps not be able to pull off Ginger's style. Yet, it's fun the way they do it anyway. Also, in "New Neighbor Sam," Skipper and Gilligan do a pretty good rendition of "Rockabye Baby" whereas in "Goodnight Sweet Skipper," Gilligan sings horribly. Not to mention that the guys can't sing in the Mosquitoes episode--and Professor and Thirston are usually quite cultured musically.

I love the way the reactions to the concert are presented regarding the castaways. Gilligan and Maryann, of course, love them and Ginger is also into them but not to the same extent, perhaps, etc.

The Mosquitoes are supposed to represent The Beatles, aren't they? Were the Beatles that much underway at that point in time--remember, the castaways were gone for awhile. Forgive me if I've forgotton this fact that is probably common knowledge to many!

Can anyone decipher the lyrics to the Gnats' song?

Interesting how the Honeybees all had those same outfits. And three cheers to the Howells for taking part in this!

When you actually see a picture of the Wellingtons in their normal guise, the change to the Mosquitoes is remarkable!

Mary Ann does a fine job of "Bill Bailey" and "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" also. As you say, they went a little too far in "The Second Ginger Grant." Perhaps they could have emphasized that Mary Ann gets stage fright when she has to perform alone. This would be consistent with her nervous speech in the Miss Castaway contest.

Gilligan does a great job of remembering the words, though not such a great job of carrying the tune of Hamlet's song in "The Producer." Of course, the Habanera is quite difficult, and is meant for an operatic soprano!

Hmmm....being cultured musically doesn't necessarily mean someone is a good singer, though the Professor and Mr. Howell are both all right in "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow;" until they start crying, that is.

That scene kills me every time. It's so fun that it's the two youngest castaways that are going crazy.

And the music really is fantastic. I love the dance the three guitarists perform as they sing. I know that we really are hearing the Wellingtons singing, but are they actually singing live there? They all seem to be sweating after they're done. And I think Les Brown Jr. was also a real musician.

I think so. There's the fact that all three musical groups on the island are named after insects, Irving's John Lennon glasses, the name "Bingo," that rhymes with "Ringo," and the scene where Gilligan sings the chorus to "She Loves You, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah."

In the honeybees episode, Dawn Wells singing was dubbed in by another singer.
She used her real voice in the 2nd Ginger Grant.

Great scene, especially Dawn Wells' little shriek. When I showed this episode to my niece she seemed get the biggest laugh out of that.

Good point to the two that made this...Mary Ann acts just like a typical teenage girl of the same time!LOL BTW The Wellingtons sang in the earlier season. Les Brown Jr. was the son of Les Brown, Sr., the dance bandleader of the 1940s who featured none other than a very young and then lesser known Doris Day, aka the prototype for Mary Ann...

Just wondering if anyone knows whether The Wellingtons actually released any records back then. I've got them doing "The Ballad Of Davy Crockett" on an unauthorized Disney collection called WALT DISNEY'S GREATEST HITS released by Ronco Records in 1976, and they also did the song on one of those little storybook-and-record sets released by Disney that I had when I was a kid. Don't know exactly when it was recorded, but it kinda sounds like mid-60's.



And The New Christy Minstrels covered the song "He's A Loser" on their CHIM-CHIM-CHEREE album. Believe it or not, they rocked out even harder than The Mosquitoes did.

The Beatles had already made a big splash in the United States before "Gilligan's Island" made its debut on network TV, and had released at least a half dozen albums (not to mention many hit singles) by the time the Mosquitoes episode first aired in December 1965.

So I'm guessing that Gilligan and Maryann were Beatles/Mosquitoes fans even before they took that fateful trip on the S.S. Minnow. Yeah, yeah, yeah!

Oh, yes, very entertaining and the spoof of the Beatles and the general music scene of the time was on target. Loved Mary Ann's "groupie" turn. (Although I'm not a teen, I would react that way at a David Bowie concert but that's beside the point).
