Cool "The Princess Bride" is celebrating 22 years....Anybody a fan?

'The Princess Bride,' 22 years old? Inconceivable! Rob Reiner's delightfully fractured fairy tale, following the separation and eventual happy reunion of thwarted lovers Buttercup and Westley (played by Robin Wright Penn and Cary Elwes), was first released in September 1987, but it's packed with enough quirk and charm to make anyone feel young at heart.

In the movie, our heroes must travel through the Cliffs of Insanity, fight off attacks from ROUSes (that's Rodents of Unusual Size), drink poison and outwit kidnappers and torturers, all in the name of true love.

Always liked The Princess Bride.

Rob Reiner was on a serious roll at that point:

This Is Spinal Tap
The Sure Thing
Stand By Me
The Princess Bride

And right after The Princess Bride-

When Harry Met Sally.
Misery
A Few Good Men

Pretty impressive string of high quality movies in a row.

The Blu Ray edition of TPB is supposed to be very good for those who have players.

That is indeed a fun, whimsical movie - a pure delight. This is one of the VERY few movies that I know of that both men and women adore. Robin Wright was starring on the now-defunct NBC soap Santa Barbara at the time, and got 4 months off from the soap to go overseas and shoot the movie. (Her character, Kelly Capwell, was sent to a sanitarium.) The rest, as they say, is history!!

Just as The Princess Bride made Robin Wright a name in film, Santa Barbara made her a name on TV, specifically daytime. Robin was the ripe old age of 18 when she was cast as Kelly Capwell in 1984 and played the role for four years, beginning at the show's very first episode.

Just see how green she was in this clip from the first episode!! The line of dialogue she is given here is so cringeworthy that I said out loud the first time I watched it. "Aw, who wrote that?" But the chemistry between her and castmate Dane Witherspoon (Joe Perkins) is apparent - he became her first husband in 1986.

The second clip not only features Wright/Witherspoon but the show's future leading man, A Martinez (Cruz Castillo, whose role at the outset was rather small) and Louise Sorel (Augusta Lockridge, now Vivian Alamain on Days of Our Lives). Cool, huh? These episodes were originally aired in July and August of 1984. Before that is an NBC promo featuring Wright/Witherspoon.

I read a rumor that Dane Witherspoon had also landed a role in The Princess Bride but was fired. I have found nothing to prove that he was even offered a role, much less hired then fired.

I highly recommend the book it's based on, which was published in 1973.

I didn't even know the movie had been based on a book until I watched the extras on the DVD. I'll have to see if my library has that book.

^ You really should - it's one of the funniest books I've ever read. The kind that makes you laugh out loud, and then you look around and remember you're in public

Of course I love the movie. And my personal hero, Inigo Montoya!

Hello, My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
