Exclamation Rob Zombie to remake 'The Blob'

reviving the "Halloween" franchise, Rob Zombie will next reinvent "The Blob."
Zombie will write, direct and produce a remake of the 1958 horror classic that launched the career of Steve McQueen. Production will begin next spring.

Zombie's deal to make "The Blob" his next film comes as Dimension opens "Halloween II," the Zombie-directed sequel to his 2007 hit "Halloween."

In the original "Blob," an object from space crashes into a field, containing a red blob-like substance that absorbs the humans it contacts and grows exponentially. While Zombie was a fan of the original, he's formulated a decidedly different take that he would not reveal.

"My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing -- that's the first thing I want to change," Zombie said. "That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now."

Zombie will produce with Genre Co.'s Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten; original "Blob" producer Jack H. Harris; and Judith Parker Harris of Worldwide Entertainment Corp. and Andy Gould.

Saperstein, the former Dimension Films president who developed a relationship with Zombie while they worked on "Halloween," said that funding is in place to make an R-rated film that will cost around $30 million. The budget model is similar to that of recent fright fare like "Cloverfield" and "District 9," and they expect to firm a distribution deal before production begins. Genre Co. is in pre-production on the independently financed, Darren Bousman-directed remake "Mother's Day."

"I'd been looking to break out of the horror genre, and this really is a science fiction movie about a thing from outer space," Zombie said. "I intend to make it scary, and the great thing is I have the freedom once again to take it in any crazy direction I want to."

Zombie has begun writing. He'll follow the release of "Halloween II" with a new album and tour this fall and get the script done at that time.

Shara Kay and Jeremy Platt will be "Blob" co-producers, and David Mendez is exec producer.

Zombie’s repped by ICM and managed by Spectacle Entertainment’s Andy Gould.

They already had a remake of the Blob in the 1980's and I thought that one was pretty good. Don't know about another one though...

I agree with you Sonny, although I will say that the Blob could still be made successfully now that we are in the age of CGI.

As much as I love Zombie I'd like to see him do more of his own original material.

I don't quite get why a remake of The Blob is necessary.

I agree he needs to do more original material or other horror movies that aren't remakes. I remember a movie studio wanted him to direct a horror comedy called Burn Off.

At this point Rob Zombie has to realize it's time to make a movie that hasn't been done before.

I mean really. We don't need any more encouragement for filmakers to run to the mill.

This is getting beyond a joke! We need more talent in Hollywood...new fresh ideas!! He'll probably get his wife to play the blob..she likes to be the main attraction in his films!

Well he has that animated flick, El Superbeasto, coming out soon so I'll be checking that one out.

He was also attached to write and direct the third Crow but they didn't go for his ideas.

Horror Nights '09: Rob Zombie on The Blob
Monday, October 5, 2009
By: MrDisgusting

We've got more interviews from the opening night of Universal Studios Hollywood's Halloween Horror Nights, which is now ongoing through the end of the month.

Beyond the break you'll find our exclusive chat with Rob Zombie from the red carpet of the Chiller Eyegore Awards where he talks about The Blob remake.

We were lucky enough to catch Rob Zombie for a few minutes on the red carpet before he headed in to accept an award. We asked him about his progress writing the latest BLOB remake, which he was announced to write and direct last month.

I’m about halfway [done],” he tells Bloody Disgusting adding that he really doesn’t know what the Blob will look like just yet.

I’m still working on it, so I cant really say… I was thinking, you know, it wasn’t going to be a big red globby thing. I don’t know what it IS going to be, it’s more like I know what I DON’T want it to be.

He also confirms that he’d like to once again work with DP Brandon Trost, who did the cinematography for HALOWEEN II.

Yeah, I loved Brandon, he’s great.

Although, it’s so early that it’s impossible to know if he’ll be involved or not.

Rob Zombie on The Blob Remake
Monday, February 21, 2011
By: MrDisgusting

Rob Zombie has backed out of directing The Blob:

"I didn't want to do another remake," he tells Empire.

"You just can't win. If it's too similar to the original, everybody wonders what the point was, but if it's too different, everybody complains that it's... too different!

I found especially with 'Halloween II' that everyone talked about what it wasn't and not what it was: 'you can't do that with Michael Myers; you can't do that with Loomis...' It's like people have a set of rules in their minds about how these things should function, and you can't work like that.

Then he should stop, it's the people who are paying to see these crappy remakes anyway. I for one want something new if not don't bother.

I'm a huge fan of the original 50's version, but I also love the 80's remake.

I'm definitely not against remakes, I loved Piranha 3D, I enjoyed the remake of I Spit On Your Grave, Last House On The Left(and Craven's version was a modern update of The Virgin Spring), Dawn of the Dead '04, My Bloody Valentine 3D. Let Me In is probably one of the best American remakes of a foreign film.

John Carpenter's The Thing is a classic, as is David Cronenberg's The Fly. The 1978 Invasion Of The Body Snatchers is excellent. Carpenter's Assault On Precinct 13 is a fantastic modern day update of Rio Bravo. Scareface with Al Pacino is a great remake.

Yes there are bad remakes, but there's also bad "original" films, and most original films aren't all that original and borrow heavily from previous movies.
