Voluntary Work - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I start my weekly voluntary work at the British Red Cross charity shop tomorrow, and I am also looking around to voluntarily work at some other charity shops for a few days during the week (so I can do some form of work whilst looking for employment.)

I am hoping that the experience will benefit me. Has anyone here done voluntary work in charity shops? If so, how was the experience for you?

I think its great you're doing charity work. I've done gigs volunteering in stores but its not the bulk of what I've done. Something good will come from this - trust me - either you'll meet someone great, make some kind of helpful contact, or at the very least - get a very warm inward glow that you've done something nice to help others! Let me know how it turns out!

Yea for you! I have been a volunteer for the Seattle Aquarium since 1998, and I love it. I work on a sporadic schedule doing the special events. It makes it nice for me to be able to be flexible about when I can work without jeopradizing my 9-5 job. I've never volunteerd in retail before, but I'm sure you'll find the experience rewarding!

Well, I had my first afternoon in the shop today - I volunteer there Saturdays, from 1-5 p.m. It was quite good. The others seemed nice - I was mostly with the manager, Robert, the assistant manager, a young guy from Ireland called Steven, and a girl called Donna.

Nothing too eventful, apart from a lady in her fifties or sixties who tried to buy some jewellery with two fake twenties. Steven was convinced that she was trying to put one over on us (particularly because she had two fake twenties.) told her that we took cards, but she said she didn't have one with her, so I said we could hold it for her if she wanted to go home and get some money. So she asked us to do that, but she didn't show up again that afternoon.

I know people can be given fake notes unawares, so maybe she was just unlucky and didn't know they were counterfeit.

How sad that someone would try this in a store that sells things for charity! Glad you guys didn't fall for her scheme!!!
