can you think of any sitcoms where a character was going to be divorced but the writers changed it so that he/she was either a widow/widower or single?

On "THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW" Mary was going to be divorced but they thought people would think she had divorced Rob Petrie.
On "THE LUCY SHOW" Lucy was going to be divorced but they thought people might think she had divorced Ricky Ricardo.

I think the whole thing of people actually not being able to distinguish one actor's character from another character of theirs is ridiculous. It's embarassing that people are really that stupid!
