Modern Family: New comedy on ABC I just finished watching an advance copy of the pilot episode of the upcoming ABC series Modern Family. I hadn't heard anything about it yet so I wasn't expecting much. What a delightful surprise. It was funny, refreshing and entertaining. Modern family is about three interrelated families. First we have Ed O'Neill, of Married with Children, as Jay, married to a much younger and hotter Columbian wife, Gloria, who was so great in the short-lived Knights of Prosperity. She has a pre-teen son, Manny, from her ex-husband. Julie Bowen, first known by many as Carol Vessey on Ed and then Jack's wife on Lost, plays Claire, a married women with three kids. Her husband Phil, Ty Burrell of Back to You, spends a little too much time trying to show the kids he's cool and winds up constantly embarrassing them. Life partners, Mitchell and Cameron, make a major life change by adopting Lily, an adorable baby from Vietnam. Modern Family is very similar to The Office in the respect that it uses the mocumentary technique. There is no laugh track, and one certainly wasn't needed. I had no trouble finding where to laugh, which I did repeatedly throughout the episode. The cast is perfect, the script both funny and original and the story is about families that everyone can relate to. Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, the same team that produced Frasier are executive producers. Modern Family premieres Wednesday, September 23rd at 9pm on ABC. Don't miss this one. |

I am SHOCKED! NO reality shows? This is amazing! Could it be that TV has finally come to its senses?
Seriously though, this looks pretty funny, although I don't know if I'd watch it on an ongoing basis. I never could get into "The Office", but a show about families might be different. I tend to lean toward those kinds of series. That was funny in that clip... WTF... Why The Face???? Andrea |
