Yes, anti-depressants can cause weight gain. I was put on Remeron back in 2000 after the death of my dog that we had for 15 years. The medicine was given to me to help me sleep. It caused me to gain weight. I once mentioned that it made me gain 26 pounds and that grossed someone here out. I'm not sure why, but it did. Anyway, after being on the medicine for three years I was taken off. It took over two years for me to lose the weight. My weight now is usually between 115-120. Last time I was on the scale it was 116.

I've been on Paxil for 6 years and I can see where it changes a metabolism. I makes me hungry...but I take it at night, so I sleep it off. I think that any weight gain I've had is laziness. I don't exercise at all. Maybe the Paxil had something to do with it, but nothing significant enough to notice. Every appt. I have with the psychiatrist involves a nurse checking your weight, so yes, it can in some people.

What time of day do you take it?

Thanks Jenny and Cathy for your feedback, it is much appreciated.

Cathy, I take it, right before bed. I cannot take Paxil during the day time, because, it makes me too lethargic

I took Zoloft once for anti depression, and my weight pretty much stayed the same. Maybe different medications have different results as far as weight gain.

That's the thing with certain medications, especially anti-depressants. They can have very odd and drastic side effects.

When I started taking Xanax back in April, my doctor warned me that one of the side effects was weight gain. But since I'm skinny as a rail, he said in my case that could only be a benefit. I've stayed between 110-115 lbs. since then, which is good for me.

Different medications have different effects on people. Could you discuss it with your doctor to see what can be done about the weight gain?

I've been taking Zoloft for 4 years now and it has definitely caused me to gain weight, but without it my Social Anxiety would be out of control.

I don't know, I haven't noticed any weight gain personally. There have been periods where I'd randomly bloat up but other than that, nothing really. Then again, I've been on anti-depressents since I was 14 so who knows, maybe I weigh more than I would normally.

You only take it once a day, right, Lu? I take 100 mg of Zoloft once a day and 0.5 mg of Xanax three times daily. I don't know what I'd do without them - seriously.

Doesn't stuff like Prozac make you lose weight?

I also remember hearing about a study with binge eating at Yale Med...and what the pretty much did was put everyone on Wellbutrin.

Not sure what I'd do without Paxil either. I don't want to be afraid of dogs anymore like I used to be, and I can't skip work like I used to skip college.
