It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia creators Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day have been developing a sci-fi comedy series during their hiatuses from the raunchy FX series: Boldly Going Nowhere, which deals with the mundane day-to-day life on a spaceship. They have shot a pilot but feel it needs work, so they've gone back to the script stage, Howerton told SCI FI Wire in an exclusive interview on Friday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Pasadena, Calif.

"We're working with Larry Charles right now on a rewrite," Howerton said. "We're adding more sci-fi elements into it right now, more aliens, just a little bit more sci-fi."

The original concept was to avoid sci-fi elements and make it as mundane as possible. Now, Howerton said, the creators have realized there's much more fun to have with extraordinary sci-fi creatures.

"That's why, because we just realized it was more fun to embrace the sci-fi rather than fight against it," Howerton said. "In some ways, the first time around we were fighting against it, and I think we fought too hard. It ended up being just not as much fun as it could be. I think we realized that in an attempt to not parody sci-fi, we ended up almost cutting out too much of the sci-fi. I think that was a mistake."

Howerton thinks the pilot was too rough to even release to fans, so he awaits the chance to revise it. "We haven't turned in the new script yet," Howerton said. "We shot the original pilot, and we've collectively been at work—the network, the studio and us, creatively—we all creatively felt like it didn't quite reach the potential that we wanted it to reach and we all knew it could reach. So we decided to basically go back into script phase once we were done with this season [of Sunny]."

They are still dealing with the daily life of the spaceship, though. "Definitely, definitely," Howerton said. "The concept is still the same. It's just that we're filling out the future world a little bit."

Boldly Going Nowhere is up for consideration at Fox. "It's tough to say whether this thing will ever see the light of day," Howerton said. "It's a pet project of ours. It's something that we care about and that we're working on, but I'm not going to lie, it's tough. It's a tough nut to crack, so we'll see. Next time we see each other [at January's Television Critics Association tour] I'll have more to report. Actually, we definitely will."

Hopefully it will end up being kind of like Red Dwarf. That would be awesome!!
