Christmas comes early as Selfridges opens it's Yuletide shop

London department store opens festive shop four-and-a-half months before Christmas Day

THOSE who moan that Christmas gets earlier every year were proved right today when Selfridges opened its Yuletide shop.

Four-and-a-half months before Christmas day, a range of festive decorations went on sale at the London department store.

But shoppers will not yet be forced to endure the strains of Christmas songs played on a loop.

The store's Christmas shop traditionally opens in late August, but has launched earlier than ever this year to cash in on the tourist trade.

A Selfridges spokeswoman said: "It gets earlier and earlier every year. This year there are a lot of tourists in London because of the situation with Sterling, which means sales to tourists are up this year."

The decorations are designed to appeal to overseas visitors, with baubles adorned with Union flags as well as "We Love England" and "We Love London" slogans.

It is too early to know how much demand there will be for Christmas decorations when the temperature in the capital is 23C - but the spokeswoman said: "We wouldn't launch it now unless we thought there was a market for it."

In addition to the British theme and a panto-theme is a trend for bright colours, with artificial Christmas trees on sale in bright pink and bright purple.

Selfridges will sell real trees for the first time this year too, but not until December.

Customers desperate to get their hands on a broader array of festive stock will have to wait until late September, when all the Christmas ranges start to appear around the store.

Christmas shops at Selfridges' Manchester and Birmingham branches will open at the beginning of October.

It doesn't surprise me. Wal-mart has had some of their autumn stuff out for a while now. Also in the fabric department, I don't shop in that section but I pass by it all the time. In the front of it, they always put out the fabrics having to do with what time of year it is. Of course, they have their autumn fabrics out but they have their Christmas fabrics out, too. Actually, I'm looking forward to the coming months. They're my favorite time of year!

I saw some Christmas decorations/candles/wreathes at a drug store I went to yesterday!

I was in the Hallmark store the other night and they already had some Hallowen stuff out

It's not even Labor Day yet! I even saw Back to School signs up after July 4th.

I really think we need to stop and live in the moment instead of rushing into things several months in advance. You wind up rushing your life away like that.

I have seen this myself. I don't know if this has happened in the past this early.

With the new movie coming out in a few weeks I know some people who are planning mini-Halloween parties early with decorations; not kids these are adults. Some requested that some stores get Halloween related items early. I guess the demand is a lot bigger than I thought.

August is way too early for Christmas.

I usually see most stores put up Christmas stuff right after Halloween. They seem to skip Thanksgiving and go right to Christmas.

i agree. we shouldn't think too far ahead but rather concerntrate on the next few weeks, instead of months. but seriously, what selfridges is doing is just ridiculous.
