I'm really angry because of the rash of articles/events/blogs/postings I've been reading concerning people that do not allow other people to have fun or get crazy or try something "stretching the envelope" because the complaining party either has "hurt feelings" or takes life way too seriously.

Two cases in point:

1) The guy in Pittsburgh that killed the three women in the health club. That guy was very frustrated because no woman would go out with him. Did he ever ask these women why? Better still - did these women ever TELL him what they didn't like about him? My opinion is that, if only ONE of those women had a thick enough skin to tell this guy what he was doing wrong, I can almost guaranttee this would never have happened. I'm sure he would have fixed it and probably got someone.

2) There was a letter I read today in my commuter train line's newsletter. In it, the writer said that he/she, along with "other passengers" very upset that one of the conductors sang happy birthday to one of his regular passengers over the intercom. The conductor was called on the carpet for that by his supervisors. To the writer of that letter, and all of his/her fellow complaining passengers, I ask this: If you're so annoyed by someone having a little fun on your commuter train, then I certainly hope you're not just as annoyed when someone says "excuse me" when they want to get off the train! You people want peace and quiet? THAT'S WHAT HOME IS FOR, PEOPLE!

People need to take life a lot less seriously, start being honest with each other (and themselves) and start having fun again. Oh yeah - that's right - I might offend someone if I did!

Seriously though, I do agree with you. It's a shame when we have to let a few crybabies take the fun out of daily life. Look at those people who forced things like Christmas, birthday parties, freeze tag, and other fun stuff out of grade schools because "someone's feelings might get hurt"

As for that wackjob in PA...yeah, some of us are lonely too, but we don't shoot innocent people over it. Bastard should have shot himself first and saved lives. And he wondered why he was single...yeah, ladies love gun-totting crazies.

I agree, some people do need to cool out, and some people just need to get over themselves.

Life is short and it wont last forever, so you may as well try to enjoy yourself. It would be a shame if people went through life and never found out what makes them happy.

I believe that guys troubles date back long before women turned down his date.

As for the people on the train thats just plain selfishness and bull****.

No, Lee, that's NOT what I said. Read the ENTIRE entry again. The point I'm trying to make is that if someone took the time to explain to him why he was always being rejected, he would have I'm sure took the advice and found someone and not felt as compelled as he did to unfortunately kill those poor women.

I NEVER said what he did was right - I simply said that if someone had actually listened maybe this all would have been prevented.

we live in such a fast paced, high stress world that our society has become self obsessed. people either are unaware or purposely ignore whats going on around them. i watched a documentary a few weeks ago about workplace killers and the question "how do we prevent this?" was raised. there is no way to determine if somebody has the potential to snap and commit mass murder. but if people were taught to recognize changes in behavior that could indicate possible aggressive tendencies, if somebody could just take the time to stop and say to someone who's troubled "hey, what's wrong?" instead of dismissing them, then maybe necessary actions could be taken to diffuse the situation before it escalates and prevent these tragedies from occurring.

in most of these cases, the killer has exhibited signs of major depression, severe anxiety, and drastic changes in mood prior to committing these heinous acts. in this particular case, its believed he kept an online journal for 9 months, documenting for the world to see his anguish and torment. maybe it started out as a cry for help but when it went unnoticed, quickly turned into frustration and then vengeful bitterness.
to quote tom selleck from his memorable debate with rosie o'donnell 10 years ago, sparked by columbine massacre:
"30 or 40 years ago, particularly men and even young men when they were suicidal they went and unfortunately blew their brains out. in today's world, someone who is suicidal sits home, nurses their grievance, developes a rage, and is just as suicidal but they take 20 people with them. there's something changed in our culture..."
that is how i interpreted what Joni said and which i totally agree with.
