Ceremony among highlights of Phillies alumni weekend

PHILADELPHIA -- Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Kalas will take his rightful place alongside Philadelphia baseball legends on Friday, when he will be posthumously inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame.

Kalas, synonymous with Phillies baseball, spent 39 years with the organization before he died suddenly on April 13 at age 73. He called the first and last games at Veterans Stadium, the Citizens Bank Park opener, six no-hitters, six National League Championship Series and, of course, Philadelphia's two World Series titles. He was also the voice of NFL Films.

His three sons -- Todd, Brad and Kane -- will be on hand for the ceremony, which will be broadcast live on MLB.com beginning at 7 p.m. ET. Larry Andersen, the Phillies' radio color commentator since 1998, will unveil Kalas' plaque.

Attending Wall of Famers will include Robin Roberts, Jim Bunning, Steve Carlton, Mike Schmidt, Dick Allen, Greg Luzinski, Garry Maddox, Tony Taylor, Bob Boone, Dallas Green and Juan Samuel. All fans in attendance will receive a Kalas commemorative print.

Kalas won the Ford C. Frick Award in 2002, earning induction into the broadcaster's wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. In June, the National Radio Hall of Fame announced that Kalas would become the 14th sportscaster enshrined there, joining the likes of Mel Allen, Red Barber, Jack Brickhouse, Harry Caray, Vin Scully and Bob Uecker.

Friday's ceremony kicks off the Phillies' annual alumni weekend. Before Saturday night's game against the Marlins, Citizens Bank Way will host the eighth annual Garry Maddox Barbecue Challenge, where celebrity chefs and novices alike will vie for food bragging rights and a trip to the 2009 World Series. All proceeds benefit the Youth Golf & Academics Program, Maddox's charity for at-risk city children.

Then, before first pitch, nearly 45 alums will take part in Saturday's on-field pregame tribute.

On Sunday, starting at 12:30 p.m., hitting coach Milt Thompson and alums Dickie Noles, Jim Eisenreich, Mitch Williams, Ricky Jordan and Ricky Bottalico are slated to partake in the Alumni Batting Challenge.

The Harry tribute was absolutely amazing. It was a tough day for Philly sports. Saying goodbye to Jim Johnson and Harry, all at the same time, even if they died within different months. Mike Schmidt gave a really nice speech and as all the current wall of famers for the Phillies came on the field, besides Harry obviously, they altered and played Harry's voice announcing all of their names individually, which was really cool and special. I will never forget this man. Changed Philly sports forever.

Swing and a long drive........it's got a chance, outtaaa here.

Thanks for the memories Harry. RIP.

Btw, even though the Phillies lost (2-1), it was special for the Phillies to commemorate Harry and his career with the unveiling of his plaque in center field of CBP. At least the game wasn't a blowout loss.
