Repetition on the Radio - Same Songs Played Over and Over

There's one station I listen to frequently that has an annoying habit of shoving the same songs down my throat on a daily basis. This station also runs a promo spot several times during the day that says....Lots of radio stations brag about their huge librairies of music, The 96.5 difference, We actually play our huge library of music. This is nothing but a joke and here are a few examples....

Elton John:
I hear him quite often but only 5 songs.... "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" , "Philadelphia Freedom" , "Rocket Man" , "Levon" and "Tiny Dancer"
I have yet to hear my 2 favorites by him... "Little Jeannie" & "In Neon"

The Beatles:
You would think that with the Beatles' library they would play a variety but nope, Their Beatles playlist is limited to "Come Together" , Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"/"With a Little Help from My Friends" and "Hey Jude"

The Rolling Stones:
5 Songs make up this band's library.."I Can't Get No (Satisfaction") , "Brown Sugar", "Start Me Up" , "Miss You" and that God-awful "Angie"
I have yet to hear "19th Nervous Breakdown" , "Paint it Black" , "Ruby Tuesday" ,"Get Off Of My Cloud" , and "Honky Tonk Women" among others

The Eagles:
Other that "Hotel California" and "Life in the Fast Lane", You won't hear much else by them

Led Zeppelin:
"Stairway to Heaven" (no surprise there) , "Black Dog" , "All My Love" and "Immigrant Song" are the only ones they ever play.

The Who:
"I Can See For Miles" and a condensed version of "Won't Get Fooled Again" and nothing else

AC/DC:
Did they do anything other than "Back in Black" and "You Shook Me All Night Long"?

These are just a few examples, In all fairness to the station though, I cannot listen 24/7 so it's quite possible that since the station is mostly automated. their computer has scheduled the songs I'm missing out on during the times that I'm unable to listen.



To sum it all up...This station needs to get serious or I need to get Sirius

That drives me absolutely crazy, too, especially with Queen & Rush!! With all the songs each band has...

With Queen, all you hear is We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions, Bohemian Rhapsody, or Killer Queen. Most of the time. Once in a great while, I'll hear You're My Best Friend or Somebody to Love.

Rush, it's usually Tom Sawyer(once I hear that very first note, I change the station) or Limelight, although I did hear Red Barchetta recently, and once in a while, I'll hear Subdivisions.

Oh, and in the case of Elton John, I love alot of his music, but one of my very LEAST faves is Bennie & the Jets. Yet, what do I hear alot of??

Oh well, alot of people are surprised I don't have satellite radio yet, either. I guess as long as I have my CDs!!

I'm getting tired of radio programmers acting like 'Moving Pictures' is the only album out by Rush. They're one of the greatest bands in the world, but there's more out there by them than the first side of that album which came out in 1981.

That's another good example and this station plays those exact same songs along with "Another One Bites the Dust."

I've noticed this especially on vacation. Years ago, when "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia came out, the radio played it all the time. I was on vaction in Vancouver (BC) and now every time I hear it, I think of it as "my Vancouver" song.
Most recently, I heard that new song by Jason Marazz over and over and over.

I listen to an oldies station called KIXI, and I LOVE it, but I do notice that they will play the same song over and over. But then again, they mostly play REALLY old stuff like Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, etc. The reason I started listening to it was because I had been looking forever for a station in Seattle that plays Harry Connick Jr. The Jazz stations never play him and one night I was watching TV and saw a commercial for KIXI radio with a picture of Harry Connick Jr. And the rest is history!

What's really funny about this station is that one day I heard the same song three or four different times, but each time it was a different singer!!!

Another example is Journey - usually hear "Don't Stop Believin', Faithfully, Open Arms, or Wheel in the Sky", most mostly DSB. I'm even happy to hear Separate Ways(Worlds Apart)!!

Mainstream radio is a joke.

The top 40 stations of course play the same tunes all the time but they are not the only ones.

Classic Rock radio plays the same Led Zeppelin, Doors, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Lynryd Skynryd, Boston tunes over and over.

Oldies radio not only plays the same stuff all the time but they seldom play anything pre Beatles(not even Elvis), and the oldies station here mostly plays stuff from the 70's.


A solution is to seek out college radio stations. They tend to play music not often played on mainstream radio and play tunes from various genres. I DJ at Western Michigan University's radio station and we never play the same stuff over and over. Go here and check out their webpage www.widr.org

If my favorite radio station decided to limit the amount of songs they play to the exact same 20 to 40 every day, then I will likely tire of some (or maybe all) of those songs and will either start wanting some other songs to be played on the station, or just stop listening to the station altogether. For example, I am talking about stations that usually focus on music from a particular decade, such as the 1970s or the 1990s. Such a station plays the same 20 to 40 songs from that particular decade while there are about 2,000 other songs from that same decade that the station can easily play, but just get ignored by that station.

The question is: Is variety in radio stations really all that distracting to most people?

I'm guessing that most of you aren't in a type of situation that I'm in. I work in a warehouse that alternates between the same 3 or 4 radio stations. Earbuds are not an option because it's considered a "safety hazard." It gets EXTREMELY repetitive and annoying. I have days where I think that if I have to listen to Don't Stop Believin, Jack & Diane or Summer of 69 one more time then.........

When I am not listening to my late beautiful precious Billy Joe Royal, I do a lot of station surfing because I get sick of certain songs too as well as those that I have no interest in hearing in the first place.

And it's even worse now with stations doing all Christmas music. There are literally thousands of Christmas songs out there done by so many different artists and yet they seem to have a set playlist of about 20-40 songs by certain singers. Listening to Christmas music on Internet radio, you hear songs done by artists you wouldn't imagine would do a Christmas album, or songs that radio just ignores because it's not wailed by Mariah Carey.

Amen to this. In my opinion everyone should be played and not just a select few and that is how I feel about radio stations all year round and not just at Christmas time.

I have noticed this a lot about the radio stations and it used to be that radio stations would play a variety of songs by different artists and then the radio stations would become huge in the cities but then when other radio stations started to do this habit it would cause the radio station to go out of business and replaced with another station. Take for instance I used to listen to an oldies station that played all sorts of oldies and they played a lot of songs from The Beatles such as All My Loving Can't Buy Me Love and Lady Madonna and they also had tons of Elvis Presley songs but all the Elvis songs the oldies station overplayed were Heartbreak Hotel Hound Dog and Can't Help Falling In Love With You and when the oldies station got tired of this habit they went broke and got replaced with a Spanish language radio station and it was my favorite radio station and I even won contests and prizes on the oldies station too. As for the Christmas music played on the radio I think it has become a fad for radio stations to begin playing all Christmas music all through Thanksgiving till New Year's Day to get people ready for December. One of my soft rock radio stations does an amazing job of playing Christmas music starting on Thanksgiving and continuing throughout December and then after New Year's Eve the radio station plays soft rock again but when I have listened to the station during Christmas all that's overplayed are Christmas songs such as Kenny Loggins's song Celebrate Me Home Paul McCartney's Wonderful Christmastime The Carpenters version of Home For The Holidays and Hall And Oates version of Jingle Bell Rock and to me there are lots of other Christmas songs out now that should be played on radio today other than those I mentioned. But the radio stations should quit this habit and start playing a whole variety of songs by different artists and this should make the radio stations enjoyable to listen to again
