Is it wrong to hate my own niece? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I know hate is a strong word, but I really don't like my niece. She's my sister's kid. She is 19 and very disrespectful. She talks back to her parents, she makes life miserable for her other siblings, and she's a cold-hearted bitch! She has a 3 year-old, doesn't know who the father is, she dropped out of school in 8th grade, and is headed nowhere. My sister lost control of her, and doesn't know what to do with her. She has stolen from everyone, including me. I haven't spoken to her in over a year, and that's the way I like it. She has no friends, and the few she had, she's driven them away. And check this out, everytime the father tries to discipline her, she calls the police! She holds the psycological advantage. I can't stand my neice!

It is sort of my sister's own fault, because when she was younger, and someone else wanted to discipline her, my sister took offense and stated, "No one chastise my kids but me!"

See how things can come back and bite you?

Some people can see no wrong with their children. Does your sis still protect her?

Just steer clear of her as you're doing now, I have a Nephew like that. I just look at it this way, I don't want a relationship with him plain and simple. You don't have to have a relationship with her and if she asks then tell her the truth it might wake her up especially if no one talks to her.

I don't think it's wrong to dislike a relative. I dislike several of my relatives because a few of them have mistreated me and others are similar to your niece.

Hell, I don't like my uncle from my mother's side of the family!

He said that once my grandma moved into her apartment, he found a buyer for her old house and we have to get everything out ASAP!

I haven't spoken to my uncle in over four years. My sister didn't invite him to her wedding - there's a lot of bad blood in our family with this man. We've decided to steer clear of him and just pretend he doesn't exist. He's not worth the effort.

I think it's untrue that you can't choose your family. I think you totally can. I have friends that I think of as sisters, and my boss is really like a second mother to me. My uncle is a worthless pile of scum that I refuse to acknowledge. I've chosen my family, and am much happier because of it.

Your niece sounds like a giant headache. The one thing I want to caution you on is how much of this behavior have you seen, and how much of it have you merely heard about? Things have a way of getting exaggerated when people are fed up. That said, if she is as bad as you say, I wouldn't waste the time in dealing with her. Your sister may find herself caught in the middle, but she needs to be the parent here and take control.

I don't blame you for feeling that way at all. I think your neice sounds like a real troublemaker and that she's heading down a dangerous path. I would say maybe you and/or your sister should try to get her some help, talk to her, see if she feels remorse or guilt and try to help her get adjusted to a new life. But sadly, I think there's some people who don't care and will only try to take advantage of you.
