Will comedy fans support a more serious Adam Sandler?
That's the key question as Universal opens Judd Apatow's "Funny People" at 3,008 playdates amid widely varied box office forecasts ranging from the low 20s to the mid 30s. The consensus is that "Funny People" will out-perform the second frames of Disney's 3-D toon "G-Force" and Sony romantic comedy "The Ugly Truth" as well as the third sesh of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." http://www.variety.com/article/VR111...goryid=13&cs=1 |

Adam Sandler has never really appealed to me. I didn't mind him in the remake of "The Longest Yard", but in general he's another one of those comedians who seems so convinced of his own preciousness that he comes of smug, insincere and cruel instead of insightful.
To each his own, though. |

He's already been in a drama (two if you count "Spanglish"). And he did a pretty good job.

The only movie I've ever liked Adam Sandler in is The Wedding Singer. That is one of my all-time favorite movies! However it's mostly due to its 80's theme. There are a bunch of things in that movie that I can do without. If it were just a regular movie set in the 2000's, I probably wouldn't have liked it nearly as much. He's definitely not made for drama. I think Punch Drunk Love was kind of a drama. I hated that movie! I didn't like Spanglish at all either!

There was the movie he did with Don Cheadle--can't think of the title at the moment--I enjoyed it.
Remembered the title--"Reign over me" |

Sandler's new movie didn't make as much as they usually do, probably has something to do with it clocking in at 2 hours 20 minutes long. It had better be funny to keep your attention span or it's going to fade away from the box office rather quickly.

Adam Sandler is a great actor and one of my favorites. Don't know if he can do serious movies. The one about the remote control was pretty good, and that was sort of serious. Jim Carey is great as well, one of my favorites and funny, but it's weird when I see him doing a serious role in a movie. Sure, The Number 23 was pretty good, but it's a different approach.

I don't like the idea of actors trying things they aren't great at. We pay money and give our time to see them, after all. Why shouldn't it be the best for us possible ?
