Eek Who Thinks Autoerotic Asphyxiation is Funny? Bobcat Goldthwait Apparently

When his son dies in the throes of autoerotic asphyxiation, dad (Williams) makes it look like a suicide and proceeds to use it to launch his own writing career.

World’s Greatest Dad, written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait and starring Robin Williams. It made the festival rounds to pretty good reviews earlier this year and will get a theatrical release beginning August 21st. If you don’t want to wait that long, it’ll also be available on On Demand starting this week.

What a horrible premise for a movie. I can just see the bans and lawsuits from parents whose kids really did die from auterotic asphyxiation. Just looked up the definition. Ugh....

Sadly, Bobcat Golthwait doing a movie about something like this doesn't surprise me at all. I used to like him way back when, but no more!

Bet he wasn't invited to David Carradine's funeral!

(Honestly, I thought Bobcat died a few years ago from a drug overdose so that just shows you what his work has been like the last while)

Default In defense...

Folks, I'm going to defend World's Greatest Dad.

I watched this film about a month ago - my roommate got a screener copy from a friend of a friend - and i must say it's actually a pretty good movie.
It is not a flat out zany comedy. It is a dark comedy about a very weird subject, but it's a small plotpoint of the movie. The movie is really about Robin Williams, and he gives a wonderful performance as a guy who creates a lie to cover up his son's death that spirals out of control.

Granted, making a movie that features a very dangerous sexual fetish isn't very mainstream, but Goldthwait was never a mainstream guy. But I also believe he is a good filmmaker.

I read about this movie on another site. It does sound a bit sick but I think it's more of a dark comedy/satire type movie.

Just because a movie depicts a certain topic that is no legal ground to being about a lawsuit.

Unless the film is depicting someone or some incident based on real life, or close to real life, then the said family might have cause to bring about a lawsuit.

I'm probably going to take a lot of heat for saying this, but I think it has to be said: Anyone who engages in something as idiotic as autoerotic asphyxiation gets what they deserve. It's like taking drugs. People are just getting more and more stupid and this is another by-product of the culture we live in these days.

I think Bobcat has the right to satirize anything he wants. If the subject matter offends you, don't watch the movie.

I agree people involved in autoerotic asphyxiation are responsible for death or injury because they knew the risks.

I think people engage in this for a few reasons. One being maybe some sort of a stunt or a "dare" between friends; which is just dumb. The other are those who do this because it pleases them sexually; they get off on the thrill or risk factor from this.

I'm open to whatever sexual practices that you want to engage in (under consent of course) but this particular activity is just plain dangerous. I know that there are risk factors in many deviant practices, that can be easily avoided if played safely, but this is simply playing with fire.

For some the risks are what gets them on. They like the feeling of "being on edge".
