Confused Christians who kill themselves

Lately, someone I knew died by suicide.

This person was a Christian and some may say "He's in Hell" because of this.

Is this true or a myth?

I guess it depends on who you ask. I'm a Christian and I think it is a myth. Infact, I think hell itself is a myth. I don't believe in the devil. I can't believe in an entity that is pure 100% evil.

I feel the same way. I think it's just silly.

I am a Christian and I believe in hell, but I am not so sure that if one commites suicide they go to hell. I have never found anything in the bible that says that.

I think it depends on the mental state of a person who commits suicide. Many people are too sick to know any better in their actions. I don't think God would punish a person for that. There are people who commit suicide to avoid responsibility for things they did or certain situations they got themselves into. I kind of think those are very selfish suicides.

if so, god's quite the douche, lol. he's the saint who created the chemical imbalance in the brain that blinds a person's judgment while under emotional distress (i'm referring to clinical depression). it isn't about "oh life sucks, i'm too impatient for things to get better" it's about "there's no more room for anything other than pain," which is why i tried killing myself three times as a christian. no one, and i mean NO ONE has the right to condemn anyone who commits suicide because of emotional distress, including "god", if he exists. i was suicidal for a few months when i was eight years old because my best friend died. to think that i'd still be frying in a lake of fire if i'd decided to go through with my running-through-traffic-to-die-the-same-way-she-did plan. absolutely ridiculous. if i was "too young", when are people "too old" to make their own decisions? poor megan meier. with the exception of a few (such as those that browneyes mentioned), suicidal people are victims, not perpetrators.

Then as a Christian, what exactly did Jesus save you from? Or did he save you from anything? Or do you believe that He doesn't exist either?

First off, I just want to say how TRULY sorry I am to hear about your friend. I've always looked at suicide as one of the saddest forms of death, because to think of someone being that scared and alone just makes me so damn helpless. I obviously don't know where your friend is, but my hope is that he is with God and His Angels as we speak.

As browneyes106 said, I also believe it depends on the person's mental state as to where they go after committing this act. Some say that you'd have to be mentally insane to kill yourself, but I disagree. I've heard of many cases of people committing suicide who had no history of any kind of serious mental illnness. I told the story before about the time I tried committing suicide, and I honestly don't think I'd have been banished to hell for the act, because at the time I wasn't of a sound mind. I might have went to hell for other things, like my lifestyle, but it wouldn't have been because I killed myself, because God has mercy, and I don't believe He'd send someone to hell if they had little to no control over their mind. It's a touchy subject, and is rarely mentioned in the Bible, infact I don't recall the Bible saying anything about where a person goes after committing this act. I do know that it says do not kill though, and I believe that would include yourself.

I am a christian and I believe it depends on your relationship with god and if he has choosen you to be one of the saved. I found this on the web and it is similar to what I said just in more detail.

As for committing suicide, if you are a saved individual, then this will not get you sent to Hell. There will be a penalty at your judgement, but Jesus will not turn His back on you if you are truly His child.

John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

If you are not a child of God and commit suicide, then the same fate awaits you that awaited you if you lived 100 years.Without accepting God's wonderful free gift, you will go to Hell. There is no question about it, and no doubt that it will happen. The thing you need to do is accept that gift now, and get covered by His Holy blood. That is the only way to change your destination.

John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Romans 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

As for the verses in Ezekiel 18, I would point to this, John 10:28-29 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

No man includes yourself, and I do believe you will lose rewards (crowns to give back to Jesus) for what you have done, but not be damned.

As for verses in Ezekiel 33 and 18, these verses are talking about those who would live by the Law.We are no longer justified by works and the law, but by Grace through Faith.Through belief in Jesus and His Gospel we are given forgiveness for what we do, and ALL sins can be forgiven if you have Faith in Him. Believe that He will forgive you as He promises to.

As for James 2,These verses define the Faith which saves. Faith that does not produce good works is not saving Faith. The devil knows God exists, or has faith, but does nothing good, therefore his fate is sealed. The same could be said of the Pharasee in Luke 18. The Pharasee was praying for the praise of men, the publican for forgiveness. The Pharasee did not have Saving Faith, he wanted men to be impressed with his piety, where the publican asked God for mercy as a sinner. The Pharasee counted himself righteous, and the publican asked God to make him righteous. The publican did a good work as in saying the proper prayer in truth and humility, and showed Saving Faith. The Pharasee did not. In Jas 2:25 Rahab the harlot is said to be justified. Obviously a sinner, a harlot who told a lie to protect God's people. Consider the following which is cut and pasted from William Burkitt's commentary,

Learn hence, that the duties and services of believers, though blemished with many defects, do find acceptance with God, and shall not fail to be rewarded by him. Rahab's faith was seen in receiving the spies, her weakness and infirmity appeared in her lying; God pitied and pardoned the one, and accepted and rewarded the other.

James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

Suicide is no worse in God's eyes than any other sin, they are all sins and all worthy of death. God's Grace and your Saving Faith can get you forgiven for your error, but there will be a price for what you did. What that price is I cannot say, but I don't think that God will destroy you if you are truly His child. Possibly you could be a servant in Heaven and wash the feet of the Saints for all eternity, but better that than burning with unquenchable fire forever, but that is just a guess. That is why it is so important to evangelize, and get as many as possible into God's family. That is their only chance at life eternal. Out of sincere concern for souls and honest interest in spreading the Gospel, and Glorifying God, we do great works and prove our Saving Faith.

I agree with that 100%. Some people just have such severe depression and/or anxiety that they are not in their right mind and don't know what they are doing. I don't want to believe that a Christian in that state of mind would be sent to hell. I hope not.

I believe Jesus exists with all my heart. I believe Jesus saved me from my sins. However, I do not look upon suicide as a sin.

That is how I feel about the sitution exactly. Very well said.

I am sorry to hear about both your friends. I don't think suicide is a sin. I was reading a magazine article once that was written by a man whose nephew had committed suicide. He for the life of him could not understand how his nephew could have done this, and was even a bit angered. He talked to his own son about it, who was very close to the nephew who was his cousin. This young kid said to his father, who didn't understand, that his cousin died of a disease...he died of depression. That article has stuck with me ever since I read it because it makes so much sense. People who commit suicide are usually very sick people with clouded judgement. They're guilty of nothing but being sick.
