the series was inspired by a theatrical movie of the same name with barbara eden starring. the film came out a year, maybe 2 before the series and was a surprise hit.

the film was based on a country/pop record called "Harper Valley P.T.A." sung by Jeannie C. Riley, which topped the charts in 1968 and sold millions of copies.

it just so happened that the U.S. was in the heat of it's "Urban Cowboy" phase, which gave this series (in addition to "Dukes of Hazard," and "Barbara Mandrell Show," among others) a chance at success that it probably wouldn't have had after 1971, when CBS went on its killing spree of "rural" shows, like "Hee Haw," "Mayberry R.F.D.", "Green Acres" and the like.
