Drool Dennis Green is back as a Head Coach...For the San Francisco.....Whatevers

They have a home, a place to play, a head coach, nine assistant coaches and 44 players frothing at the mouth - but no name.

That's either above, or below, Dennis Green's pay grade as head coach of the San Francisco franchise in the fledgling United Football League, which is set to begin a season of six games in October and November with four teams (Las Vegas, Orlando and New York are the others).

For now, Green is happy to be back in coaching with the San Francisco John Does. A formal nickname, and an announcement of players on the 50-man roster, is expected the first week of August. The John Does will play at an annoying diagonal approach in AT&T Park.

"I'm excited. I'm surprised I'm back coaching again," Green said Tuesday by phone. "I really thought I'd stay down in San Diego and stay retired."

However, the prospect of coaching in California again was enticing for Green, who fashioned a 113-94 record in the NFL with the Vikings and Cardinals and was Stanford's head coach, 1989-92.

"The reason I'm coaching here is I'm committed to California," he said. "I'm California-bound. Things worked out great for me because it enabled me to stay in California. I won't be back in the NFL. I think that ship has sailed."

Green's denouement as an NFL coach came in 2006, with the Arizona Cardinals after a one-point loss to the Chicago Bears. In what became an instant YouTube classic at his post-game news conference, Green bemoaned "letting them off the hook" and bellowed, "They are who we thought they were!" while giving the podium a good whack.

Having coached in the NFL recently, Green is attuned to the type of players who might have spent two or three years in the league but didn't make it to four because of prevailing economics of the game.

"In the NFL now, if guys get to their third year, if they don't jump out, they don't make it to the fourth year," he said. "The way the game is, you can't give a fourth-year player $700,000 when you can get a first-year player for $300,000. Once the league thinks you can't play anymore, you can't get a job."

Enter the UFL, friend to an entire subset of players who believe they still have it and simply want a chance to show it. The San Francisco Whatchamacallits have first rights at signing former NFL players who were in the AFC and NFC West divisions. Green said 44 players have agreed to terms, but the UFL is holding off making announcements on personnel.

"It's been 50 years since an alternative to the NFL has played fall football," said Green, 60. "The UFL is an opportunity for players who never had a chance to develop (in the NFL), as well as bring entertainment value. There are a lot of guys who can play professional football. The American public does love football in the fall. It's our job to put a good product on the field."

Cool

Well you know what they say - once a coach, always a coach!
