CBS Decides to Keep Cronkite’s Voice on ‘Evening News’
With the death of Walter Cronkite on Friday, July 17, CBS News had decided to no longer use Cronkite's recorded announcement introducing Karie Couric and the evening news, the New York Times reports.
The announcement, used since Couric started, had Cronkite saying, simply, "This is the 'CBS Evening News with Katic Couric.'" Sean McManus, president of CBS News, told the TImes that it was "probably not appropriate" to use the announcement after Cronkite's death. —Chuck Ross http://www.tvweek.com/news/broadcast/ |

I heard Couric say that on larry king the night walter died and I thought that was rather a quick decision....I think it is an extreme insult not to use the mans' voice and he would too....CBS is paying such tribute to the man they forced off the air at age 65 because it was a rule. They treated him with such disrespect and they are doing it again....years after McDonald Careys' death, the daytime drama used his opening voice over, "And These Are The Days Of Our Lives".....to continue to use Walter would be a tribute for years to come, it's probably comes down to money, they probably have to pay a residual to his estate after death.

I didn't know that they even did this. I haven't watched CBS news since the 1980's when I finally had it with Dan Bladder.

The fact that DOOL continues to use McDonald Carey's voice in the opening segment "Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives"/"This is McDonald Carey, and these are the Days of Our Lives", is the smartest thing-and recently the ONLY smart thing they've ever done. Andrea |

Just to clear up any confusion, they initially decided to stop using the intro, out of respect for Walter and his family. Then the family gave CBS their blessing to continue using it, so they changed their minds.

I'm also glad CBS has decided to keep the voice of Mr. Cronkite on the air... he was CBS news in so many respects and his passing should be honored and forever remembered.

Continuing to use Walter Cronkite's voice on the CBS evening news is the right thing to do and that's the way it is!

I'm very glad to hear that Walter's voiceover will continued to be used, but CBS can put it anyway they want, the truth is the family and CBS came to terms regarding residual payments for his voice, in TV...as in life....it all comes down to the almighty $$$$!
