This is something I have always wanted to know for years. Everyone else at NASA had a blue uniform, but Major Healy's was green. Anybody know why that is?

Sure....easy question.....in the early days of the astronaut program, most of the astronauts were pilots recruited from the US military. The vast majority were either Navy pilots (navy blue or khaki uniforms) or Air Force pilots (blue or khaki), but an occasional one from the Army (green) snuck in too. So Sidney Sheldon was borrowing facts from the real astronaut corps with his characters. Tony was USAF, but Roger was US Army Corps of Engineers (telling us that he had some engineer background as well as pilot quals).
There's a neat correlation here, too ... in real life, Larry Hagman was a USAF veteran (enlisted), and Bill Daily was an Army vet (also enlisted). Check out the FAQ file on our website for more trivia like that .. |
