Abby was my favorite. I thought Betty Buckley did a great job playing her and the range of emotions she had with that character was quite powerful. Especially the episode when her mom came and announced she was divorcing Abby's father. That was powerful and the performance was quite grabbing. I wept. Any episode featuring her were powerful. For a stage actress who never did TV she did well for herself. She did good to come into a show that was still grieving over the loss of the actress, referring to Diana Hyland, she replaced.

I have to agree with the comments about Betty Buckley. Abby wasn't always the most likeable character, but she was one of the most realistic. This was one of the few times where a show introduced a stepparent who wasn't embraced a replacement for the lost parent (unlike "The Brady Bunch", for example). Abby didn't really try to be a parent to Tom's children, with the possible exception of Nicholas, and instead tried to establish friendships with them.

I agree with TV Guy's comments about Abby not trying to be a substitute mom for the Bradford children because when she came along they were adults or teenagers with the exception of Nicholas. She did a great deal of parenting to Nicholas, i.e. when Nicholas wanted a BB gun and she would not let him have it at first, a teacher harrassing him by comparing him to his siblings and Abby going to the school to talk to the teacher and her explaining the transitions the family was going through when it seems as though he did not have anyone to come home to. The list goes on. It was definitely a good point that when Abby came along she was not initially embraced by mainly Elizabeth and Nicholas. She gave a powerful performance on the wedding episode. Many times I have seen that episode to this day it moves me to tears especially when Abby tries to explain her love to Tom to her mom. Kudos to the show by letting Betty Buckley display her singing talents on the episodes that the family took part of a telethon. Especially the episode when she sang So La during her first season on the show.

Nancy was. Not only was she very pretty, but I thought she even resembled her mother Joan.

Nicholas, Nancy, and David were my faves. I itentified most with Nicholas being close in age and often wondered if Adam Rich had been working with a cast closer in age, maybe things wouldh have turned out better for him. I think the closest one in age was 8 or 9 years older. I also think someone should be sued for the damage done to that kid. Blame him all you want, how does a child walk around the set of ABC studios with a rum and coke in hand, smoking pot, and watching porn? Its not right and I think its child abuse.

My favorite Characters were Elizabeth and Susan...I had a big crush on both actresses...
I also liked Tommy...it reminded me of how my brother and father interacted.. They had a very troubled relationship. It was nice to see a TV family not always get along--everyday isn't happyness. It made the show more realistic IMHO.. |
