I was watching goodtimes last night, it's the episode when James bought a gun and all those locks were put on the door, (I think it's either season 1-3) if crime was so bad in Chicago and after talking about it, why in the hell did Florida tell Thelma to get a dollar out of purse and go to the drug store to buy some asprins and told JJ to go wash up,
WHAT THE HELL, A TRUE WRITER SCREW UP, SOMEBODY READING THE SCRIPT SHOULD OF YELLED AND SAID: WAIT, THIS SCRIPT LINE IS BACKWARDS, JJ SHOULD BE GOING TO THE DRUG STORE IN THAT CRIME INFESTED NEIGHBORHOOD, NOT THELMA. I think the writer did not want JJ to look bad as a man getting robbed, and beat up, so it really looked bad for Thelma, that is why she was used for that part to get robbed.

I agree, those writers were amateurs. First of all, were the aspirins that necessary? Old fashioned parents like James and Florida should have known better to send Thelma out to the store in a bad neighborhood. And whether or not they didn't want JJ to get beat up as a man, it looked just as bad having Thelma getting robbed and assualted.

I know, sometimes I'm tempted to buy a Smith and Wesson and use it on Austin and Irma Kalish and Allen Manings (the producers responsible for removing John Amos).

My opinion only but I think this episode was overdone to make it look like bringing a gun in the house is a dangerous thing to do.

I always wondered if Crime has escalated in Chicago in 1975 and the producers wanted to reflect on the show what was really going on in Chicago at the time

Since Thelma lived in that neighborhood all of her life I do not think that it was so out of the ordinary for her to go to the store alone.

I did end up finding out that in 1975 there was a high volume of crime in the Cabrini Green Projects which may have generated the episode idea at the start of season 3 which was in sept of 75
