Thumbs down 'Bruno' At Box Office Top Spot? WTF

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Bruno," British satirist Sacha Baron Cohen's latest subversive outing, narrowly claimed the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office in North America, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday.

The "mockumentary," in which Baron Cohen plays a gay Austrian fashion model seeking fame in the United States -- sold $30.4 million worth of tickets during the three days beginning July 10, distributor Universal Pictures said.

The opening was in line with the expectations of the General Electric Co unit, which paid independent producer Media Rights Capital $42.5 million for distribution rights in North America and eight foreign territories. Media Rights declined to disclose the budget.

Baron Cohen's "Borat," by contrast, opened to $26.5 million. But that was from about 800 theaters, while "Bruno" played in 2,756 theaters. "Borat" ended up with $128.5 million in North America and an additional $133 million internationally.

"Bruno," inevitably, faced a similar storm of controversy as "Borat" did. In the new film, Baron Cohen's character sashays across the American landscape, piling on the homosexual activity for unsuspecting co-stars and a squeamish audience. Critics mostly liked the movie, while gay-rights groups were mixed in their reactions.

"Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" held steady at No. 2 with $28.5 million, taking the 12-day haul for 20th Century Fox's cartoon to $120.6 million.

Last weekend's champion, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," slipped to No. 3 with $24.2 million; after 19 days, Paramount Pictures' robot sequel has earned $339.2 million, easily the biggest movie of the year.

I say it's good for Cohen.

You either like his comedy or you don't.

I absolutely loved Borat, but for some reason this latest film doesn't really appeal to me. Borat I thought had the funniest scene in movie history in my view, and that was the naked fight scene. Oh my gosh, I watched that scene five times in a row, and my sides hurt from laughing so hard. This new film hasn't gotten as good of reviews as Borat, and the premise doesn't interest me. I probably will watch it, but I'll just wait for the DVD.

Bruno Struts To Double Win With U.K. Number One
15 July 2009 12:11 PM, PDT

Sacha Baron Cohen's hit movie Bruno is dominating on both sides of the Atlantic - it has knocked Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs off the top of the U.K. box office charts following a similar feat in the U.S.

The comedy, based on Cohen's outrageous gay Austrian fashionista, took nearly $7.5 million (£5 million) in its first weekend, while the third instalment of the Ice Age franchise followed closely behind with $7.1 million (£4.8 million).

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which was officially named the biggest film of 2009 so far last week, came in at number three with $2.2 million (£1.45 million), while The Hangover took $1.8 million (£1.23 million).

Johnny Depp's Public Enemies rounded out the top five, grossing $1.6 million (£1.04 million).

The only other new entry to make the U.K. top 10 was Bollywood movie Shortkut, which debuted in 10th place
