For me there's only one question I always dread answering a person who I've just met. That question is, what do you do for a living?? When you meet a person, that's always one of the first things they ask, which is part of the reason why I dread meeting new people. Having to tell them that I'm on disability is the most embarrassing thing in the world. I can see it not being embarrassing for someone who's in their 50's or over, but for someone who's 27, it's quite humiliating. I mean I know it's not my fault that I am the way I am, but the ackward silence, or surprised look that you often get upon telling someone, makes you just want to sink to the floor. I know I shouldn't care what people think, but I do, and this is a touchy subject for me. That's why I'm glad you all know. I don't have to explain it to anyone. Anyway, so that's what I hate getting asked. What do you hate, or dislike being asked by someone?

I've been that way the past couple of years because of my horrible employment (or lack of) situations.
Brad, the next time someone asks, just tell them "You work for the government". In a sense you do, you ARE being paid by them so to me, it's not really a lie.

I dread being asked about my lovelife, or lack thereof. I'm 28 and still single, with no prospects in sight.
On the flip side, I love being asked if I have children. I smile and say, "Yes, about 2 dozen of them." People's responses are priceless.

That's great, I'll definitely have to give that a try. lol! Reason I brought this subject up is because I was asked this dreaded question during a facebook chat this morning. If they press me any further after I tell them that I work for the government, I'll just say I'm not at liberty to discuss that. I love that answer Cathie, thanks!!

For the past five years, I've been living with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I am in pain all the time, and if anyone watches me walk, they should be able to tell I'm disabled. My knees don't straighten, and I slouch really, really bad. Sometimes I have to use a wheelchair, like when I'm in airports, museums or a "walking" city like San Francisco.
So you can imagine I get a lot of "What's the matter"-type questions. Which is fine; I'm used to it. But when I tell them I have RA, I dread the additional question, "Aren't you a bit young for arthritis?" |

My mom has bad rheumatoid arthritis, and it's painful just watching her get out of bed most mornings. Her toes are curling up, and I see her deteriorating right before my eyes. I really sympathize with you my friend, and I just wish there were a cure for diseases like this. Know though that you will be in my prayers. I wish you the very best!!

OMG Can I ever relate to this!!! I was diagnosed at 22 with RA and Fibro. Because of my age and being into fashion, I still wore high heels most of the time and always for work. When I'd be into a flareup I'd be walking stiff and my company gave me a parking spot by visitors so I wouldn't have to walk too far (especially when it was icy). Oh the comments I would get! Why do YOU get special parking? You're too young for arthritis (sorry folks - toddlers can even get RA), etc., etc.. It got to the point that I had a scripted explanation of what RA really is and how anyone can get it at any age. Nothing worse than having a medical condition that the world feels you owe them an explanation for. |

If it's a stranger, I hate to ask them where I work just cause I don't want them to visit me...
But that question was asked of me and I just said, I work at a mall and the guy kept asking.. Then the driver who talks out of his ass tells the guy where I work.. But I haven't had any problems since then but I really need to bring my ipod so people don't talk to me. |

The one thing that bugs the crap out of me, is "Does it suck being short?" I'm 4'11'' and I ALWAYS get a question about that when people meet me. Ten years ago in middle school, it was kind of funny. Now it's annoying.
Everyone I meet asks me variations of that question "How do you do stuff since you're so short?!" "Hey...can you get that for me? Oh wait, you're too short to..." I'm short, but that doesn't mean I'm not capable of doing or getting stuff. People think it's funny but once you hear it about twice a week or so, it gets pretty damn annoying. And fast. |

^That sounds really annoying. I have some friends who are that size, and they are some of the toughest ladies I know.
The main annoying questions for me: "How do you pronounce that?" (regarding my name). Ugh, I get it almost every time I try to introduce myself to someone... and I enunciate so clearly... and they STILL don't get it!! I usually have to say it 3 or 4 times, and then spell it for them. I found this yahoo post on their message board of a bunch of people hating on my name. It's pretty funnny! The Name Matlyn??Another one: "Why aren't you dating anyone??" I just HATE that question... and it's almost always from women. It's like they can't comprehend a 19 year old young woman being happily single. Geez louise! Great idea for a thread, Brad!! You always ask such original questions!!

The question I hate being asked by employees is "What's your home phone number, area code first?"

I've never had that question about it sucking to be short. But I have had to ask people to get things for me or put things up for me. |

Interesting thread. The question I hate the most comes from up at every family reunion, "Why aren't you married yet?" Followed by "Are you dating anyone?" and then the dreaded, "Oh...so you don't want to be with someone?" UGH!
The other question I get a lot usually comes from the kids I work with at school. I have lupus, which luckily I only have the kind that effects my skin and not my organs, but I have a lot of places on my skin that are discolored or scarred and sometimes I have flare ups and I'll have red splotches or dry rashy places on my arms or legs and kids are always asking me "What is that?" or "Did you hurt yourself?" They are always very concerned. I always tell them what it is and then they are fine, except one little girl last year suggested I put some make-up on it to cover it up. I wonder how long it would take me to apply full body make-up everyday? I usually just wear long sleeves and pants.
