I recall learning in Biology courses (both in High School and College) that all female insects (and animals) require a mate in order to fertilize their eggs, and make babies. A friend of mine said that there are insects that do not require a mate, and can reproduce on their own (like flowers do).

Can anybody confirm, or deny, this?

There are a few insects that reproduce asexually (without a mate). An example of this is aphids.
