Confused Computer Volume Question

I had my wireless internet reconfigured, and when I got it back working again, after calling Verizon & them fixing the problem, my volume shortcut, in my task bar in the lower right corner of my computer screen won't show up, and when I go to the "Control Panel" and then to "Sounds and Audio Devices", I bring up the volume tab of the "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" menu, and it says their is no audio device. I don't remember if their ever was an audio device. I thought you had an internal mic & speakers, and you had volume on your computer without having a device. When the Verizon guy was fixing my wireless internet not working, he used the program where they take control of your computer and fix the problem, with the computer in front of them. But he was right in front of me, I could of stopped if I saw him doing something that I didn't like, but I didn't need to and he fixed it fine. He didn't do anything except go to a web site, check the settings, change a setting that was computed incorrectly, and the problem was fixed, so it would have nothing to do with my volume being touched. I noticed the volume wasn't working when I went to youtube to watch a music video. I turned the volume all the way up in case I couldn't hear it, and their was no sound all together. I tested the sound, in case the video was just not working, but I went to 5/6 other videos, and still no sound whatsoever. Like I said, I used to have a shortcut to adjusting the volume, in the lower right corner of my computer monitor but it's their no more. If I could at least find out how to get to the levels, in case it's muted completely, maybe it would work then but I can't get their.

I have an Acer Aspire 3000, with Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600

I bought the computer from my cousin's girlfriend, but I'm pretty sure the computer was bought in 2008

Can somebody please help? Thanks.

This sounds like something I had with my laptop where it won't play any sounds other than the computer sound. If I put in a DVD, it wouldn't play the sound.

The only thing I can think of is doing a search for volume control?

But I don't know how to put it in the right hand side of the computer.

Yeah I did a search for the word "volume level" and "volume" and I still couldn't get to the volume.

And I had that problem with the DVD thing. I played Happy Days, one of my discs for the first season on this laptop and the volume was working, but for some reason it didn't work for the DVD that was playing at that time. I really wanna get this situation, then I'll get the DVD volume figured out. I just want my volume back.

Yeah I don't know how to do that. I think you could make a shortcut, but honestly I don't know. Thanks for trying to help WF.

I just thought of something...

Maybe go to device manager and find the sound card. It should have a tab where you can install or uninstall and try that..

Try to do an update first, if that doesn't work then click on uninstall the device then go to Control Panel and click on add new hardware. Then click on yes, I have installed it since you didn't remove the hardware or anything.

I did that one time and it worked. Good luck.

I have a Dell computer...I had that before and had to go to dell.com and download the drivers (software for the sound board) again. That could be your problem.

how did you get to the device manager? i will try that, but it could just be muted and i can't find the volume control. so with me not being able to find it, it could be on mute, every sound level on the computer and I wouldn't of even known it. i will try all that. i really appreciate it. thanks for the help.

You're on XP, so...

If you have it set to Classic Layout, Start > Control Panel > System then click on the Hardware tab, and Device Manager will be there.

If you have it set to the other layout, Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintanence > System then click on the Hardware tab, and Device Manager will be there.

No problem.

Sometimes it's best to have a friend who can look in your computer and stuff but glad you got the help.
