Default Bad online chatting etiquette

First of all, I absolutely love online chatting, but there are a few things about it that sometimes drives me absolutely insane. Here are a few of them. I hate it when you're in the middle of chatting with someone, and suddenly they just stop chatting for no reason for like 15 minutes. This sometimes scares me, wondering if something happened to them, or if they had a heart attack or something. I also hate it when people give you three word replies to everything you ask them. Three words is nothing, and gives you nothing to chat about. I also hate it when people go offline in the middle of your chat with no explaination. At the very least, tell me where you're going, or even put brb. lol!! That would suffice. Another thing that pisses me off, and this probably annoys me more than anything, but when you're both about to log off, I hate it when you're right in the middle of writing your goodbye, and the person goes offline before you finish saying goodbye. That annoys me to no end. Most chats tell the other person when the person on the other end is writing something, so there's no reason to log off before they get to give you an adequate goodbye. These are just some of my biggest chatting pet peeves, and I'll probably think of more. What are your chatting pet peeves??

Some of these things annoy me as well Brad lol.

How come your browser kept logging you off FB the other day though? it kept doing it and you said something was wrong with it.

but yeah, i hate the, leaving before you say your goodbyes, problem, & when they go idle. Except I don't think they'd be having a heart attack, they probably just went in the other room for a second and got a glass of water or something- lol. I know I do that, but I try not to idle, especially if I'm talking to a good friend or an old friend, or if the conversation is really interesting, grabs my attention or am having fun with it as well. So it would make no sense for me to leave is what I'm saying, even though my back gets stiff sitting on the computer in my chair. I also REALLY hate when I'll be on AIM and I respond to somebody's last IM, and they'll be like, are you their? what are you doing? while I'll be typing. Usually that happens during a long response by me, because they get impatient, I guess for good reasons though , and respond back before I get the chance to. You ever get that Brad? I'll think of more in a few. Good thread.

oh and I also hate when people don't respond to my posts fully. I can be understanding of missing an IM or two, but a lot of times people will just randoml y talk about something else, as if I didn't say anything, or sometimes I'll IM the person 3/4 times and they don't check back to see if they get all the messages or not, before they start responding. I know I check back to do that, because one missed. It could be something you wanted to read, so I would hate it if they wouldn't get the IM from their perspective as well.

Hey Kyle, sorry chat kept messing up on us the other day. I didn't even know that was happening. I think that was a problem within Facebook, because I was right there in front of my computer chatting the whole time. I totally can relate to the are you there thing?? I hate that too. I can understand someone saying that if you've been idle for like 5 minutes or something, but they can see that it says you're typing, so you're obviously their. Some people have no patients. I can also relate to people missing stuff you said, and it annoys the hell out of me. I'm very careful not to miss anything, and I wish others would show that same consideration. Just so you know, these kind of chatters are in the minority for me, but they still annoy me. lol!!

when you're in the middle of typing a series of messages to explain something, and they interrupt and go on some tangent before you even get to your point, and then ignore anything you say to try to get back on the subject at hand. i got so sick of that happening, i started making a game out of it by saying random things like "i'm the lord jesus christ" in the middle of their off-topic ramblings just to see if they were even reading what i was saying.

I hate when someone IMs you and then doesn't say anything after the "hey, hey, what's up, nm u? same" part.

That bugs me as well. It's like...why did you just IM me if you don't plan on saying anything? Same thing goes for when people text me. They'll just say "Hey" and I respond with a "Hey. What's up?" and...nothing.

Another thing that bugs me is when you're in the middle of a convo, and all of a sudden, the person goes idle and doesn't return for a while, or even signs off, without saying anything.

Exactly. It's just becomes awkward after that.

Yeah, it's weird. I have a friend who would randomly do that and after a certain point, I just stopped texting him back. It was a waste of time, and I wasn't liking it. He asked me about it and I told him how I felt. His response? "Oh...I'm just checking in, saying hi, being nice..." Saying stuff like that usually implies you want to have a conversation.

Haha exactly. I don't understand it. One of my friends does that, my best friend's boyfriend. He'll im me and we'll do the initial exchange and then it goes dead. I try to start a conversation and he replies with like one or two lines and it dies again. I love the kid, but it's so annoying lol.

It's better than it being in person-now that would definitely be awkward!

The only thing that bothers about online chatting is when a person stops chatting and they go idle.

I hate the idle stuff too! Very annoying! I've only chatted with people maybe five times at most, and every time it seems like as soon as I get on, we talk for a bit, then everyone leaves! I'm starting to think that it's me!!!!
