Theo proved to Cliff he could make it as a regular person

Remember the ep when Cliff had the Monopoly Money and tried to show Theo that you need LOTS of money to make it in this world?

Theo challenged him by saying

I will live in NJ instead of NYC and will ride a motor bike and get by on Bolonga and Cereal." Not only that he had $200 left over after paying bills and buying food and then Cliff asked him that weak question-"Do you plan to have a girlfriend?

Then he takes all the money-lol Having a girl doesn't mean you will give her all your money. anyone fee Ttheo proved Cliff wrong??

Solomon, how many people do you know that subsist on a diet of only bologna and cereal? No one I suspect. Therefore the food budget would be higher than Theo thought. So I would say Cliff is right and Theo is wrong.

So you are saying that Theo didn't show he can manage his money??? Every Situation Cliff threw at him theo had a way of making an adjustment to save money. It wasn't about Bologna and Cereal, it was about Theo knowing how to save a buck and showing Cliff that everyone doesn't have to make a lot of money to make it on their own.

Theo made adjustments but they weren't all realistic. For example living in New Jersey to save on rent. If his job was in New York then commuting everyday would probably cost more than what he is saving.

I don't think that Theo proved Cliff wrong because Cliff did not ask him to pay every bill that needs to pay to keep a household running.
The bills I pay:

Rent
Light bill
Cable bill
Internet (high speed satellite)
Groceries
Car insurance or with Theo's case motorcycle insurance
Phone bill or today's case a cell phone bill
Water Bill
Clothes Theo's would be high because he wanted to look good
Gas
Health insurance
Furniture unless he wants to sit and sleep on the floor
House accessories such as toilet paper, tooth paste, dish detergent, tide ect..
Theo would not have two hundred dollars left over even if he didn't have a girlfriend. He learned that when they put him in the Real World.

It still wouldn't have been nearly enough. I remember that ep so well because I went through it with my mom. We ended up taking a one bedroom apt. together - imagine being 22 years old and having to share a bedroom with your mother?! LOL Even then, there were months where we needed to sell things (her sewing machine, my flute) in order to pay the rent. We were both working at office jobs at the time too. And even living in NJ was more expensive than Toronto at that time!
Theo would have been so screwed if he had tried to leave home then. Especially coming from the upperclass household he did! No $95 shirts for that guy I'll tell ya!

Theo wasn't trying to move out then, he was talking about in the future. And this ep always rubbed me the wrong way because the Cliff character gave off the message that he LOOKED down on regular people and that you are nothing in life unless you are a doctor

It wasn't in the longterm future though - remember, Theo brought home a bad report card and didn't really care about getting into college. It was about that time that college was becoming more and more important to get a good paying job - and not just professional jobs. Heck, most administrative jobs now even call for a BA or at lease some sort of college certificate. Why wouldn't he want the best for his kids since he could afford to give them amazing educations. Also, remember, Cosby has always talked about what blacks have had to go through in order to get the same sort of opportunities as whites, so a college education would be a big part of that. I never really got the feeling he was looking down on regular people necessarily.

I have to agree with Solomon though, that it actually did seem like Cliff and Claire looked down on people, who didn't have a fancy college education. It wasn't just that episode either, but now and then through the run of the show.

That's the one thing I didn't like about the show. They just didn't do it occasionally. It was done all the time through the years. Claire especially acted like a snob. After awhile I liked ADW even better than TCS. I watch sitcoms to be entertained not to have lectures.

Well, Cliff is not the only dad who would feel that way. Even white dads would feel the same way Cliff felt. Anyone remember how Steven Keaton felt about Mallory's boyfriend, Nick?
