Jerry Springer is baffled his U.S. TV show has stayed on air so long - because it is "awful".

The 65 year old has hosted The Jerry Springer Show since its debut in 1991 - but he's mystified as to why viewers are so hooked.

He says, "We've been doing this show for 19 years now and I'm really sorry for that. No one had any idea that it would last all these years."

And Springer can't help but cringe when he watches back his very first episode: "That was pretty pathetic but it's not as if it's got any better, it's still awful."

Actually I like his show better than Maury Povich. For some time, Maury was obsessed with talking women into cutting their long hair. I don't know why it seemed to bother him that a woman wanted to keep her hair long! After that phase, it was all paternity tests. Montel Williams tends to be a drag as well.

At least Springer's show has some humor, like when the Reverend uses the titles of soap operas when he performs a wedding!

Actually, Springer's show for the first year was a lot more like a "Phil Donahue" type, with serious topics and guests.

As for the show now, it's been years since my cable outlet carried it. My mom and I used to watch it late at night for laughs, but even then it got to be too repetitive. There's "so bad it's funny" bad, and then there's "too bad to be funny" and Springer sort of went into the latter territory eventually.

Yeah, The Jerry Springer Show was a serious talk show when it first came out. It got more and more outrageous when "controversial bands" and white supremacists came on the show and the audience wanted to be shocked more and more.

There was also a "talk-show war" going on at this time with everyone trying to compete for shock value; Jerry Springer, Maury, Ricki Lake, Jenny Jones...

Yeah, as soon as he sees that huge paycheck he's getting, he'll realize why it's still on. Um, hello? If you don't like your own show, then it must be your ego that's keeping it on!!!
