Big Screen 'CHiPS' Will Happen Next Year, Says Wilmer Valderrama

Wilmer Valderrama is attached to star in a movie based on CHiPS, the classic Erik Estrada series about the highway patrol. The film has been in limbo for a long time, but Valderrama says it's finally ready to happen.

"Yeah, 'CHiPS' is going to happen next year," Valderrama said at a press event for his children's series, Handy Manny. "That's been a roller coaster because we had a couple of problems."

First roadblock, the writer's strike of 2007. "We couldn't do another draft so we had to wait. The writer's strike went forever," said Valderrama.

Second roadblock, a box office slump. "Then a couple movies did really bad in the box office and that made everybody go, 'Okay, let's redevelop this' and did this. Then there was a possible actor's strike and we're like oh, god, jesus," he explained.

Third roadblock, the SAG strike, has so far been averted but a fourth roadblock has been the economy. "Everybody was green lighting less and less movies but now, the town is picking up again. They're being a little more daring with films again and stuff like that," he said.

Fifth roadblock, Valderrama's schedule. He explained, "I just finished a lot of the projects that were pushing the starting date. So now we're gearing up for early next year which is great. I'm excited finally to think about it."

Now the only roadblock left is learning to ride a motorcycle. "I learned finally but I haven't ridden anything that heavy, so that's another battle to come. I gotta make sure I know what's up with that motorcycle because I hear it's really hard, but Erik Estrada said he would teach me," Valderramanoted.
