Cloverfield Director Talks Let the Right One In

Cloverfield director Matt Reeves talked to the Los Angeles Times about his upcoming English remake of the award-winning Swedish horror film Let the Right One In, which was based on John Ajvide Lindqvist's original novel.

"I was just hooked," Reeves told the newspaper. "I was so taken with the story and I had a very personal reaction. It reminded me a lot of my childhood, with the metaphor that the hard times of your pre-adolescent, early adolescent moment, that painful experience is a horror."

Reeves has finished a second draft of the script, now titled Let Me In. The film will be set in Reagan-era Colorado. He is scouting locations, looking to maintain the original story's chilly, snow-swept environs.

The production is also looking for the two leads, which Reeves vows will not be aged-up to make the film more of a smoldering Twilight-style romance. The story centers around Oscar, an overlooked and bullied boy who finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl who turns out to be a vampire.

Rumor: Is Philip Seymour Hoffman In The Let The Right One In Remake?

Slashfilm.com is speculating that Philip Seymour Hoffman may be joining the cast of Matt Reeves American remake of Let The Right One In, retitled Let Me In.

The web publication got a tip on the potential casting and later found Hoffman's name listed in the cast credits on the NY Times website.

We would imagine that Hoffman would play the Håkan character from the original?

Also of note, Kodi Smit McPhee (The Road) is listed as "Owen" (Oskar in the original Swedish version) and Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass, (500) Days Of Summer) as "Abby" (aka Eli).



While none of this is official as of yet, it's a sign that the production could be ramping up to start shortly with a tentative fall 2010 release date still in place. We'll do a little more digging and see if we can confirm any of the above.

The original beloved vampire classic Let The Right One In was directed by Tomas Alfredson from a script by John Ajvide Lindqvist based upon his original novel and starred Kåre Hedebrant, Lina Leandersson, Per Ragner, Henrik Dahl, Karin Bergquist, Peter Carlberg, Ika Nord & Mikael Rahm.


The remake is being written and directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) and is set in Reagan-era Colorado.

Reeves is adapting from the original source novel as opposed to remaking the Swedish film. More when we hear it!

UPDATE #1: Bloody Disgusting made a few phone calls and is sad to report that Philip Seymour Hoffman has NOT been cast in the remake.
Rumor debunked.

UPDATE #2: Production Weekly is reporting that filming begins first week of November in New Mexico and that the new title is officially "Fish Head". Yeah, explain that one to me.

Full Let Me In Casting Announced, Fish Head Title Dropped

Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road), Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass) and Oscar-nominee Richard Jenkins (The Cabin in the Woods ) will headline the cast of Let Me In (thankfully dropping the title Fish Head), Matt Reeves’ adaptation of Let the Right One In, when principal photography begins this fall in New Mexico.

The announcement was made today by Hammer Films Co-CEO’s Simon Oakes and Nigel Sinclair, as well as Overture Films CEO Chris McGurk and COO Danny Rosett.

Director Reeves (Cloverfield) has cast Smit-McPhee (The Road) and Moretz ((500) Days of Summer) in the two lead adolescent roles of Owen and Abby for the eagerly awaited horror feature. Jenkins will play the lead adult character known as Hakan in the original film.



Based on the bestselling Swedish novel, Lat den Ratte Komma In, by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist, Let Me In is a contemporary vampire tale about a young boy who befriends a girl new to his neighborhood. The film is a remake of the highly acclaimed Swedish film, Lat den Ratte Komma In, also known as, Let the Right One In.

Hammer acquired the remake rights to Let the Right One In at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival where the film took home the Founders Award® for Best Narrative Feature, and has fast-tracked the film for a November 2009 start date. The film is a Hammer Films production with a projected 2010 release in the U.S. by Overture Films. Exclusive Film Distribution is handling worldwide sales and distribution of the film.



Producing the film are Hammer’s Simon Oakes, Guy East and Nigel Sinclair and Oscar®-winner Donna Gigliotti. Hammer’s Alex Brunner and Tobin Armbrust will executive produce along with John Ptak, Philip Elway and Fredrik Malmberg. Overture’s Robert Kessel, EVP Production & Acquisitions, will oversee production for the studio. Swedish producers John Nordling and Carl Molinder, who produced the original film, are also involved as producers on this remake.

The Australian-born Smit-McPhee, 13, stars alongside Viggo Mortensen in The Road, a film festival favorite due out in November. He previously earned the AFI Young Actor’s Award® in 2007 for his role in Romulus, My Father.

Moretz, 12, will star in the much –talked-about Kick-Ass next spring and previously appeared in (500) Days of Summer and The Amityville Horror. She has been nominated each of the past three years for a Young Artist Award®.



Jenkins first worked with Overture on The Visitor, for which he earned a Best Actor Oscar® nomination last year. His recent work includes Burn After Reading, Step Brothers and television’s “Six Feet Under.” He is due to star in several upcoming projects including the much-anticipated The Cabin in the Woods, Dear John and Eat, Pray, Love.



It was announced last year that Reeves will write and direct Let Me In. In addition to the box office hit Cloverfield, Reeves' directing credits include the comedy The Pallbearer, starring David Schwimmer and Gwyneth Paltrow, and the hit television show “Felicity,” starring Keri Russell, which he co-created and executive produced along with partner J.J. Abrams.

"Kodi, Chloe, and Richard are my absolute dream cast,” says Reeves. “I couldn't be more excited to be working with them."


Let Me In is the first film in a two-picture co-production, financing and distribution agreement between Overture Films and Exclusive Media Group, the parent company of Hammer Films and Spitfire Pictures.

Let Me In Officially Begins Production in New Mexico

Principal photography began today on Let Me In, writer/director Matt Reeves’ adaptation of Let the Right One In, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Reeves (Cloverfield) and young stars Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road) and Chloe Moretz ((500) Days of Summer) were among those on-set as filming commenced on the Hammer Films production at Albuquerque Studios.

Filming will also take place in various other locations in New Mexico before returning to Albuquerque to wrap in January.

In the haunting and provocative Let Me In, an alienated 12-year-old boy (Smit-McPhee) befriends a mysterious young newcomer (Moretz) in his small New Mexico town and discovers an unconventional path to adulthood. The film is based on the bestselling vampire novel, Lat den Ratte Komma In, by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist, and is an English-language remake of the highly acclaimed Swedish film of the same name.

The filmmakers note that while the new film will pay respect to the original Swedish version, they intend to forge a unique identity for Let Me In, placing it firmly in an American context.

“This project is very personal to Matt as it is to the many passionate fans of the original story,” said Simon Oakes, President and CEO of Hammer Films. “The brilliance of that story deserves to be seen by audiences on a wide scale and we are excited that the pieces are in place to make that a reality.”




Updates to the cast list include:
Elias Koteas (Shutter Island) as the policeman
Cara Buono (“The Sopranos”) as Owen’s mother
Sasha Barrese (The Hangover) as “Virginia.”

It was previously announced that Smit-McPhee and Moretz would play the leads “Owen” and “Abby” respectively and Oscar-nominee Richard Jenkins (The Visitor) would play the guardian of “Abby”.

The first photo from the set of Let Me In (the U.S. redo of Let the Right One In) was posted via the production's Twitter account.

Admittedly, it's not much to look at. "Owen" and "Abbey" are the character names of stars Kodi Smit-McPhee and Chloe Moretz, respectively.

The young duo began work on Matt Reeves' film this week in New Mexico. Richard Jenkins, Elias Koteas, Cara Buono and Sasha Barrese co-star.

MTV: Is "Let Me In" a remake or a reimagining?
What are you keeping from the original and what are you changing?

Matt Reeves: It's very much an Americanization of the tale that John Ajvide Lindqvist tells. The film touched me. And I read the book, which he also wrote, and it moved me too.

It reminded me so much of my own childhood in certain ways. It's so much about that period of preadolescence, that feeling of being a child and of being bullied, the difficulties of growing up. It's such a beautiful coming-of-age story, in addition to being such a terrific genre story.

One of the things I really wanted to do was find my own way into the story while still being very, very reverent to the beautiful film and to the wonderful story that they created.

And so the story in many ways follows the same trajectory. I really wanted to put you, even more so, into the point of view of the boy and understand his childhood as vividly as it comes across in the book.





MTV: How much have you paid attention to the folks who are nervous about a new version of the Swedish film?

Reeves: In a certain way, there has been a real bull's-eye on the movie, because people had so much love for that [original] film. I share that love, and for me, what was important was to have reverence for the original while at the same time trying to find the way to make it our own.

That has been what this process is about, to really want to mine the foundations of that story. It's about the details and the things that make it an American story and putting it in an American context and the things that I relate to from my childhood and the things that the actors bring.





MTV: Any vampire film these days is, fairly or not, going to be compared to the "Twilight" juggernaut.

Reeves: I think that it has obviously really touched a nerve and tapped into a very, very deep vein.

To me, the thing about genre stories that is the most interesting thing is what you do with the metaphor of the genre. You can do a grand, sweeping love story, like "Twilight," and use that metaphor of the two people that are just being torn apart and the aching-ness of it, and that's a great fantasy.


I think that what people respond to in "Twilight" is the fantasy of it. It's such a grand, romantic fantasy, and in a way, the reason why I think there is room for a film like ours is, though it's a vampire film, it uses it in such a different way. Whereas "Twilight" is kind of a fantasy, this will be a darker, scarier kind of journey.

Obviously, "True Blood" is also really big these days too, and that's a different thing using the sexual side. I think it's really about what sort of emphasis the story takes and how you use the metaphor.

The amazing thing about genre films is the way to smuggle in different kinds of themes and things worthy of exploration. I think what so struck me about this story is that what it is exploring is so different and so real.

Chloe Moretz On Playing Abby in Let Me In

In the next year, you'll be hearing a lot about 12 year old actress Chloe Moretz.

She appeared in last year's (500) Days Of Summer, but in 2010, not only will you see her as the deadly assassin superhero Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass (have you seen that red-band trailer?) but more notably for genre fans, she'll be playing the role of Abby in Let Me In, the American remake of Let The Right One In.



MTV asked her what the new version is about.

"It's about a boy who lives in Los Alamos, New Mexico," she explains.

"Growing up, not many people like him, he's not popular. He's wimpy, kind of an outcast. Then this girl moves in, she's totally different. She doesn't wear shoes, wears raggedy clothes — it's sort of like "Romeo and Juliet" with vampires.

She can't be with him, because she's a vampire. But they fall in love; it's a really sweet coming-of-age story between a little boy and a little girl."



To properly portray the role, Moretz really got into the mindset of a vampire that's cursed to be forever immortalized in a 12 year old body.

"It's a very sad and heavy burden to have; it's not easy to live," she says.

"You need blood to live, and that's not an easy thing to go through. [My character, Abby] has to kill for it. She's a very sweet, loving person. And that's why I relate to the character — she's a beast, it's a demon inside of her and she can't stop it from coming out ... when I turn into a vampire, it's terrifying."

Chloë Moretz, who plays Abby in Overture Films' vampire drama Let Me In, recently chatted with Movieline about her role as the devilish vampire girl.

In short, these vampires aren't "cool".



"The character of Abby…I mean, usually a lot of movies glamorize being a vampire. It’s pretty, it’s cool, you look awesome! The way we did it was that it’s not cool to be a vampire," she tells the site.

"It’s a burden that she has to carry with her, not this fun, cool, interesting thing. It’s scary, deep, and dark, this devil inside of her. The vampire is different than Abby. It’s like her alternate personality, and when it takes her over, she has no control."



Being directed by Cloverfield's Matt Reeves, the Hammer Films co-production arrives in theaters October 1, 1010.
