The theme song said it all: She could turn the world on with her smile, which was just one of the many reasons everyone loved spunky Mary (Mary Tyler Moore), the Minneapolis newswoman who was paving the way for single career gals long before 'SATC.' Mary had a lot of support during her quest for love and work wins, from neighbors Rhoda and Phyllis and co-workers Murray, Mr. Grant and yes, even Ted.

Great choice - it's personally #3 for me, behind Barney Miller and The Bob Newhart Show. But I love TMTMS, so I'm not quibbling!!

It's a great choice. I can think of sitcoms that were AS good, but I honestly can't think of any that were truly BETTER. For me, All in the Family, Barney Miller and MASH are also right up there. Bob Newhart was hilarious but it never quite had the added poignancy bonus that some of the others did.

Great news!
We live in a "the latest is always the greatest" society, so I'm thrilled any time The Mary Tyler Moore Show is recognized for its brilliance. And although one could quibble with some of aol television's choices, they definitely got No. 1 right...there were a lot of good shows in the 1970s, but TMTMS was the best! P.S. Spunkii, did you notice the pic they ran of Mary seems to be either a just-before or just-after shot from the same photo shoot from which you pulled your avatar? |

Yeah, you know I look back at the way they portrayed those two and at that time, it was really pretty revolutionary. Think of how much more accepting society is today of women in their 30s who are single. Sure we've got a ways to go but in the early 70s there was tremendous pressure for such women to "hook up" regardless of the quality of the, err.."hook-ee".
