The queen (your boss) gives the commands and the worker bees (employees) follow them (building the hive, gathering honey, protecting the queen, etc.,).

In what context was this term used? I wouldn't consider it an insult. It's better than being called a slacker.

Sounds like all this person has going on is their salary and he has to put others down to make himself feel more important. Fugettaboutit!

The first thing I thought of was "Bee Movie"!!!!

This looks like a "worker bee" to me. I'd take it as a compliment myself because bees work harder than anyone, according to this movie.
