Together as Twins

I laugh as Jamie and I walk into the cafeteria of Eastland School. It’s been almost 17 years since we were born and it’s now September 5, 2001. Both Jamie and I are in our junior year of High School and we are both competing for valedictorian when we’re seniors. We were both raised by the gang, but Sarah and Mathew were our main ‘parents’. Jamie is just like our mom. Her world revolves around motorcycles, cars, and sports. I’m a little mellower. I like makeup and dresses but I do like leather jackets and cars as well.

“Hey Jane,” my boyfriend, Brandon, says as he runs over to me in his uniform and letterman jacket.

“Hey Don,” I say as I kiss him. He grins down at me as he takes my books.

“No kissing in the school,” Aunt Blair says as she gives us a grin.

“Yeah sis, no kissing in school,” Jamie taunts as she put her books on the table. I roll my eyes as I turn back to Brandon.

“So, why are you here?” I ask as I straiten his shirt with his arms around me.

“You know how my parents work in the Twin Towers?” he asks as he gives me that smile that makes me melt.

“Yeah,” I whisper seductively.

“My parents are sending me a ticket so I can walk around with them and she asked if you wanted to come along since they’re using the company jet and we accidentally booked my sister’s room with two beds.” I smile at him as I kiss his cheek.

“What day?” I ask him as I stare up into his gorgeous eyes.

“September 10 – 15,” he told me.

“Aunt Blair, can I go?” I ask as I run over to her.

“Ask Sarah,” she says in a teasing voice. I nod as I pull out my cell. It’s not long before I got the ok from my godmother.

“WE’RE GOING TO NY!” I scream as I jump into Brandon’s arms. He smiles at me as I wrap my legs around his waist. I start to kiss him when I hear my sister clear her throat. I turn to see her with her arms crossed. Brandon puts me down and gives me a quick kiss before taking off. “You ok sis?” I ask as I walk over to her.

“It’s nothing Jane; I just have a bad feeling.”

“Aw, what’s the worst that could happen?”

Chapter 2

When I said: ‘What’s the worst that could happen?’ I didn’t know the half of it. I’m currently standing in the middle of the floor. There was ash and sot everywhere with fire every which way. I try to cover my ears as people scream. If only I’d listened to my sister. She was so scared and worried with her “woman’s intuition” acting up.

“Help me,” I whisper as tears slid down my face.

Yesterday:

“Jane,” Jamie said as she grabbed my arm, “don’t go.” I looked at her with a soft smile on my face. “Please don’t go.”

“Jamie, I’m going to be fine. I can take care of myself,” I whispered as I engulfed my twin in a hug. Jamie worried about everything, she may be a biker on the outside, but she was really soft if you rubbed her the right way.

“I know, alright, be careful,” Jamie said as we did our special hand shake.

I smiled as I took Brandon’s hand. He squeezed my arm and pulled me into the terminal. I gave Jamie one last smile before boarding the plane.

Present:

I screamed as plaster hit my face. “Jane!” I turned to see Brandon yelling for me.

“Brandon!” I screamed as I ran towards him. I had just grabbed his hand when the floor came out from under him. “BRANDON!” I screamed as I grabbed hold of him as he fell down. Tears slipped from my face as he hung onto me. I cried as I grasped at his slippery hand. “Brandon, don’t let go,” I begged as I pulled at his hand, but he was too heavy for me. If there was a God in heaven he’d better come through for me now if he loves me.

“I’m sorry Jane, I love you,” Brandon said as he let go of my hand.

“BRANDON!” I screamed as he fell to the ground under us. I no longer felt the tears run down my face, I no longer heard the screams of the people around us trapped in the fire and ash. All I could feel were the screams running from my throat. All I could hear was my screams of pain. All I could see was the boyfriend – that I loved with all my heart – dead on the ground underneath me.

“Come on Jane, we have to get out of here,” Brandon’s sister, Kelly, said as she grabbed me. I turned to see tears in her eyes as she glanced at the body of her older brother.

“NO, I WON’T LEAVE HIM!” I screamed.

“Jane, the roof is going to fall in we have to go!” Kelly screamed.
