1966 Plymouth Fury VIP - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I have added another car to my collection.

I've been itching to buy another Mopar after owning a '66 Dodge Dart GT (V-8) and have only recently been checking out ads and ebay auctions.

And a 1966 Plymouth Fury VIP showed up in late May (that was the top of the line Fury; Fury I was the base model, then Fury II, Fury III, Sport Fury and finally the VIP... Very Important Plymouth).

This one is pretty much what I was looking for. I actually wanted one that needed some body work but had a good-running engine. I can do the basic body work myself, like removing rust and applying primer.

It is an out-of-state car. I would prefer one in my state so I could test drive it, but these cars are quite rare.

This particular car has the optional 383-4 bbl V-8 engine, rated at 325 horsepower and 425 lbs-ft torque. Standard was the 318 V-8, with options being 383-2 and 4-bbl and a 440-4 bbl V-8.

It is a full-sized car, with a 119" wheelbase and 209.8" overall length (17.4 feet). Has 89,000 miles, with working A/C. Original interior (but needs carpet). Also original engine and transmission.

One of my brothers owned a '66 Fury III (318) from 1976 to 1998 and am already very familiar with these cars. His car was the same color as this one. Plymouth called it "Soft Yellow" but we always called is "cream."

Thanks. Glad you like it. I really like the front end/grille, the "bow-tie" effect of the taillights and the big and comfortable seats.

A very nice interior for a "low-priced" full-sized car.

My '66 Plymouth was delivered yesterday. When the driver drove it off the trailer he mentioned that he thinks the brakes need adjusting so I thought it wise to take it to a local shop where it is now.

I was able to take some photos of it. I really like the seats... deep, plush and very soft. Actually softer than the seats on one of my former Cadillacs (a '71). The body is very straight.

That is a beautiful car and it's obviously been taken care of very well over the years. It's in great condition.

Congratulations! When I was in high school my dad bought a new "Silver Special" they called it. It was a Fury II with a few extras, but not quite a Fury III. Silver exterior, with blue and gray interior and upholstery, a 318 V-8. It was the first time we'd ever bought a car brand new, and it's probably our most memorable car. What I liked about it was that it had a really smooth ride, very spacious inside, a low dash with phenomenally huge visibility with the windshield, and a huge trunk. We used to go on a lot of family trips with it, to include sometimes pulling a trailer. I know that there are bigger V-8s out there, but our 318 did just fine.

We loved that car. I'm so glad for you. Fury is a good choice. One of the best cars ever designed. Enjoy every minute of it

Thanks. It will be fun to own and drive. I'm glad it has under 100,000 miles (89,385).

Nice to hear from others who have owned and experienced these cars.

Yes, they are big, inside an out. I like the big speedometer and as you mentioned, the good visibility and huge trunk.

That's a cute car and it is in great shape for a 1966 car. Enjoy your car. You've collected a lot cars. Are you looking for cars that are older? Like 1930's or 40's?

No, not looking for any more cars! 4 is more than enough for one person!

I have thought about owning a '48-'49 Cadillac, just to see how 1940s cars drive. I know a Cadillac guy who owns a '49 Cad but haven't seen it in person, only from photos.

Great looking car...! My next door neighbor used to own later model year Furys in the '70s.

Your years of interest coincide with the years of Buicks my uncle owned, a 1949 Super 8 and a 1966 LeSabre. The '49 was a straight-eight (cylinders).

I used to drive a 1970 Buick Skylark, from the muscle car era.
