Default Kate Gosselin: A Feminist Icon/Hero???

Okay, normally, I hate reality shows. However, lately, I can't seem to stop watching "Jon & Kate Plus 8" for some reason. And alot of girls I go to school with all really love Kate, as do all the other women I know. And I hear most women think of Kate as some sort of "feminist hero", or our new "feminist icon". There are even alot of men who like Kate and think of her as a strong woman. What bothers me is I for one hate the way she talks to and treats her kids and her husband. I tried bringing out the fact that what if the situation were in reverse and he was treating her the way she treats him? If that were the case, the show would get bombarded with hate mail, protests from NOW and ultimately get cancelled. But alot of women say that they love that Kate treats her husband like crap, because as one woman says, "After the whole Rihanna/Chris Brown scandal, it's empowering to see a woman cut her man down to size." A girl I know from school said that "Kate has every right to treat her husband the way she does. Men can't keep thinking they can get away with mistreating women." I just think this whole thing is really backwards and it's even made me stop watching "Jon & Kate" because of all the misandry and female cheuvanism all of a sudden. There's even been reports that Kate has been known to physically assault Jon...and women still admire her and look up to her. Sick!

well i would have to agree on half of it and half not agree with kate i think is just coming to realize that life on tv and what they say and them on the covers of those mags is the price they have to pay you know! and i like kate but i think that she really needs to lighting up! and stop yelling and jon all the time and maybe even get some marriage help! i'm sorry to hear that there marriage might be ruining and i don't believe that jon ever cheated on her at all! but my advice to them would be quit the show and get some marriage help!

I agree with your post 100%. Kate is NOT a role model. She has no right to talk down to her husband that way. She treats him like crap. If that's feminisim, then I want no part of it.

These people are very misguided. Rhianna's situation and Kate's situation have nothing to do with each other. John does not abuse Kate- if anything, it's the other way around. I don't understand this kind of thinking. Why would you want to "cut down to size" the man that you supposedly love and cherish?

Stupidest thing I've ever heard. She treats him like sh*t & who supported the family financially, besides the success of the show & plot, and before the book came along? HE DID.

Even my mom loves Kate and thinks she has every right to talk to Jon that way. And she also has a ton of famous fans as well (who all pat her on the back for the way she treats Jon). Like Kelly Ripa, Rachael Ray, all the ladies on "The View" (especially Joy Behar who says that it's a treat seeing a woman castrate her husband on a weekly basis), Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Alba, Drew Barrymore....the list goes on and on! And yet, if it were him talking to her the way she talks to him, he'd be public enemy number one! It's all just really backwards.

When has Jon ever mistreated/abused Kate? I must have missed that episode. I don't think it's fair him to compare him to Chris Brown at all. If your friend keeps thinking this way she is going to end up solo.

I don't watch this show but from what I've read and seen on TV she is a greedy, horrible bitch. It is so uncomfortable to watch how she treats her husband and I'd hardly call that respectable OR feminist. How about mutual respect? You don't mistreat someone you supposedly love because other men have mistreated you or someone else. If you can't have mutual respect, you probably shouldn't be married, much less having children.
