Lets make a list of all short lived tv series Pre-2000 (lets say 2 seasons or less) that have official dvd releases, so we can analize why one show might get made and not another. (Exclude shows after 2000, current shows seem to all get released)
Good Morning, World (1 Season, 1967-68) Lotsa Luck (1 Season, 1973-74) Quark (8 episodes, 1978) Police Squad (6 episodes, 1982) Tabitha (12 episodes, 1977-78) Thats My Mama (1.5 Seasons, 1974-75) All-American Girl (1 Season, 1994-95) Planet of the Apes (14 episoses, 1974) Bill Cosby Show (2 Seasons, 1969-71) (S1 out) My So-called Life (1994-1995) Sports Night (1 Season, 1998-1999) The Dana Carvy Show (8 Episodes, 1996) Voyagers (20 Episodes, 1982-83) |

I'm not sure why CPO Sharkey can't get a release when it has more eps and the same amount of seasons as That's my Mama and also Don Rickles is more popular than anyone ever was that starred on that's my Mama |

I agree, thats why I'm trying to put together all the tv series that have gotten releases and compare shows like CPO. I would think shows that have someone before they were famous or spin-offs (like Fish and The Ropers) would be sucessful,

Unfortunately, I don't think there is any logic or reasoning behind a dvd release for a short-lived series. I think sometimes it just so happens that a company holds the rights to something and they just go with a release. Other times, I think someone has a personal stake in the show and perseveres until the release happens.
I think another reason why some shows don't make it to dvd is because they are not available in decent quality or in a ready format for dvd. It was looking promising that S'more released Lotsa Luck and Good Morning World. I thought we might see many more short-lived shows after that. Unfortunately, they weren't big sellers and the studios haven't exactly made it easy for a company as such to license out a show. The stupid thing behind that deal is the studio isn't making any money at all off of a series that is just collecting dust in their library (cough..Sony ) and someone is willing to do the footwork to get it out there. They could be making something out of their back catalog. I've had several discussions with people involved in these releases. It's a real shame that more short-lived shows aren't available. |

I agree unless the short-lived series is connected to a current big time star then it may never be released |

Earth 2-1 season (Universal)
Original Battlestar Gallactica 1 season (Universal) Buck Rogers- 1 1/2 seasons (Universal) Cleopatra 2525-2 seasons (Universal) Father Murphy-2 seasons (Image) It seems short lived sci fi shows seem to do better on DVD and studios, especially Universal, are more willing to release them. |
