Default Name a movie that you felt inspired other movies to become hits

"Stripes"-the 1981 movie with Bill Murray and Harold Ramis looks like it paved the way for the "Police Academy" movies. The whole premise is there. Police Academy is a lot like "Stripes" in many ways.

"Gremlins"- Looks like the "Goonies" and "Critters" took inspiration from this.

"Boyz N the 'Hood"- After this became a hit in 1991, "Juice" followed, and "Menace II Society" Urban black life was hot on screen in the early 90s.

Although it's far from a perfect movie, 1965's The Eye of the Devil was a definate precurser to The Wicker Man. Eye of the Devil is nearly forgotten today, except for the fact that it was Sharon Tate's screen debut. But its plot is unique, and was explored much better in the Wicker Man.

"Adventures In Babysitting"-the 1987 movie seemed to have pushed the way for Christina Applegate's "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" In 1991.

Both movies had Keith Coogan in it.

The late 70s-early 80s saw a lot of slasher films; in particular based around a certain day.

The success of Halloween and Friday the 13th spawned the slasher flick boom of the early 80s with Prom Night, Silent Night: Deadly Night, Mother's Day, April Fool's Day... to name a few.
Another popular series was the Sleepaway Camp flicks.

In recent years it was revived with SCREAM when the late 90s had a spawn of slashers; I Know What You Did Last Summer, Valentine, Urban Legend...

Around this time more sequels of popular franchises were coming out; Halloween H20, Jason X, Bride/Seed of Chucky...

Finally nowadays we seem to be in the remake stage.

The success of Airport in 1970 started the 70's disaster craze, besides the sequels to Airport, there were films like Towering Inferno, Earthquake, Flood!, The Poseidon Adventure, etc....

The success of George Romero's 'Night of the Living Dead' ('68), and later 'Dawn of the Dead' ('78), spawned the 70's and 80's zombie craze- Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things, Fulci's 'Zombi, Grapes of Death,etc...that popped up in the 70's and 80's(most from Italy)

'Mad Max' ('79), started the post apocalyptic craze in the 80's- Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone, Empire of Ash, The Last Chase, and the countless Italian flicks like 1990: The Bronx Warriors, and 2019: After the Fall of New York

'The Exorcist' ('73) spawned many 'demon possession' movies- Abby, Lisa and the Devil, Return of the Exorcist, The Exorcist: Italian Style, Beyond the Door, even the Turkish 'Seytan', etc...

'Jaws' ('75) spawned many 'aquatic animal attack', Piranha, Alligator, Up From The Depths, etc....

'Conan The Barbarian' ('82) started the 'sword and sorcery' craze of the 80's- The Beastmaster, the Ator films, Sword and the Sorceress, Hawk the Slayer, Barbarian Queen, etc....

Actually I didn't because the original came out in 1976 and didn't inspire a slew of films after it. The second remake (there was a Disney TV movie remake in the 90s with Shelley Long) was also way after the craze.

Athough it was made for TV - 1995's Pride and Prejudice was a huge hit, and inspired a whole Jane Austen revival - and Bridget Jones's Diary would never have happened.

I never liked Best Picture-winner Unforgiven. To me, it was just a gritted-up version of (the highly superior) Shane.

Titanic seems to owe a lot to The Poseidon Adventure.

The Patriot seemed to me to be a remake of Braveheart just with different accents.

There were a bunch of underwater themed movies in 1989- Leviathan, Deep Star 6, The Abyss, Lords of the Deep

The late 80's saw a bunch of 'executed killer seeks revenge' flicks- Prison ('88), The Chair ('88), Shocker ('89), The Horror Show ('89), Nightmare Beach ('88), Destroyer ('88) and all these films came from Indestructible Man (1956)

Actually Like Father and Son is a lot like Vice Versa, since Vice Versa ('88) is the 6th adaptation F. Anstey's novel(and this is counting the British series from '81, and the adaptation for a 50's anthology series) dating all the way back to 1916.

I think in the 90's movies like The Mighty Ducks and Rookie of the Year inspired other sports/kids movies.

1968's Rosemary's Baby started a new trend in horror films. The devil being reborn in the modern world was a new idea that Ira Levin had, and The Omen and The Exorcist owe a lot to its success.
