Either they dressed it down for the series or they really let that property go downhill.

I believe the original set of GOMER PYLE was housed on the old "40 acres" lot, which was part of the old Desilu Studios backlot in Culver City. The backlot was sold off and torn down in 1975 or 1976. Unless they moved these buildings to a different location, but I am pretty certain everything was destroyed, even the town of Mayberry was flattened.
