Do You Believe There Is Truly A Family Like The Keatons - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Today I was watching the Family Ties episode "The American Family" where Lauren interviews the Keaton family for a term paper that she is writing on the "typical American Family". In the episode, the Keatons all decide that the reason their family is so special is because of love. I don't think anyone could argue with that. However, I was thinking, is there really a family out there that loves one another as much as the Keatons do? I've never met any such family. I wish I had.

I think the love in the Keaton family starts with Steven and Elyse. I think their love is really a very 1960's sort of love. I'm not sure in 2009 a man and woman can have that special kind of love that Elyse and Steven do. If you get married today, there is a more than a 50% chance that the marriage will end in divorce. Also, I recently read an article that said that today young men and women don't really trust one another. That's certainly not what I would call the foundation for a lasting and loving marriage. Of course, the bond between Mr. and Mrs. Keaton may not have even been possible for the men and women who came of age during the 60's since that was the first generation where divorce became a common happening.

The Keaton children also truly love one another. They are always there for one another. Even Alex and Mallory, who bicker a lot, are there for one another when one of them needs a shoulder to cry on. A perfect example would be the epsiode "Keaton Vs. Keaton" where Mallory and Alex are competing for the same scholarship, and Alex (who would have won) drops out of the running so that his sister would win. I would like to think that there is really a brother and sister out there that would do that for one another, but, sadly, I doubt it. Speaking for myself, growing up I was never in any sort if competition with one of my sisters, so I don't really know how I would have acted if put in a similar situation as Alex.

So does anyone beleive that a love like the one between Steven and Elyse is really possible and that there truly is a family like the Keatons? Or that there could be a family like the Keatons? I would like to think so. Just like Mr. Keaton, I'm a romantic, and I truly want to believe that there is. After all, who wants to grow old alone? If a person has to grow old, wouldn't it be nice to have someone to grow old with? Also, I don't think men and women were meant to be alone. I don't think either could have true happiness that way. So I would like to believe that a family like the Keatons is possible. Infact, I have to believe it.
