say there was someone with a ghastly sense of humor but only used it within limits and was actually a decent person with an open mind and a lot more compassion than most people have. what if they found something hilarious that they knew crossed way over the line, but they couldn't help it? not just briefly chuckling and moving on, but laughing to tears and going days not being able to forget about it because it was so funny, even though they feel really guilty about it. as long as they keep it to themselves for the sake of respect, is there anything morally wrong with them?

i know sometimes i find some dark humor in some of the heinous stories i see in the news, but the story usually has circumstances that are out of the norm - like lorrena bobbit for instance, something along those lines. i don't think its the actual tragedy itself that i find humorous though, its more the absurdity of how human nature can be, the things some people will do that are unbelievable and unthinkable to most.

It's difficult - my sense of humour is a very "safe" sense of humour, if you know what I mean - I don't see any humour in tragic events and am often appalled and offended when other people do.

I think peoples sometimes use humor in tragic situations as a way of sometimes dealing with events that are so horrible that they couldn't deal with it any other way. How many jokes have been made about Hitler? Like in Indiana Jones and The Last Cruisade when Indy actually gets Hitler's autograph. That scene is certainly being played for laughs. However, there was nothing funny about what Adolf Hitler did. Being half Jewish, I cerainly don't think of his actions as funny. I'm sure Steven Spielberg (a Jew) didn't find Hitler funny either. Schindler's List is proof of that. It is just that what Hitler did was so teribble, sometimes humor is our only way of dealing with some of the things he did. As Kim said, its the complete absurdity of the situation.

To give an informed opinion, I'd have to know what the person thought was funny.

I think it all depends on the situation really. I believe there are some things that people should never make a joke of, like a friends family member dying or something like that. I just can't possibly see what could be funny about that. Like Kim said though, there are situations behind tragic moments that can make you chuckle, and I don't see anything wrong with that. For example, I saw a story on the news awhile back where a buffalo, or some big animal attacked this guy, and the guy ended up unconcious, and with broken bones. Of course I didn't find that funny, but I couldn't help but laugh when the animal started humping the guy afterwards.

So, like I said, it all depends on the situation to me.
