Smile NOW FEATURING...BEAUTY IS AS BEAUTY DOES

OK--Gladys, yes, to be diplomatic. But who do you think really won the beauty contest? Remember, you'll have to take into account not only Gilligan's real vote but those of the other men as well!

Why does Skipper tell everyone to shut up when the beauty contest news is given on the radio? What's the big deal?

I think hitting Ginger with a pea shooter is a little mean.

I love Maryann's evening gown outfit. It's a little strange (is it?) that she's had dancing lessons, it seems. Do farm girls usually have them--I don't know, I'm from the city.

It's also a bit much that the Professor actually trips Gilligan to speak with him.

Someone had to point out to me Gilligan peeking at Maryann without her bathing suit; I had never noticed it. Does the Professor peek as well?

It's interesting that Skipper has to control his lust for Ginger and act as her
"coach." Admirable job, Skipper!

Originally, Ginger is rehearsing a dramatic monologue for the talent part but she ends up singing a song instead.

Pretty gutsy of Thirston to call Gilligan (the judge) a "fool," and pretty nasty given the ordeal through which Gilligan had to go.

Why does Maryann look so juvenile in her black bathing suit and suddenly looks as if she "blossomed" in the swimsuit competition? Was that her little sister earlier? Also, why isn't she wearing her bathing suit? Did it get ripped by the fishing pole? Could be.

I wonder what would've happened if Gilligan had first endorsed one of the women in the opening scene and someone ELSE was the fourth man. I wonder what any of the other three would have done? I wonder how it all would have transpired. Curious thought.

I might be wrong, but I think we discussed this idea in a different thread... Hmm, I'll try to find it and post a link.

Those men did get very wrapped up in the competition, didn't they! And, if they really wanted to be technical, Ginger should have won [aside from the 'native born' incident] because Mr. Howell and The Professor disqualified their contestants. An interesting thought...

Oh!!!! Well, let's think, which man would have been the fourth man out if Gilligan had spoken up? Shall we presume that Gilligan would have spoken for MaryAnn and Mr. Howell for Mrs. Howell? My bet would be that the Skipper would still start the idea by voicing his support of Ginger, leaving the Professor with the deciding vote. That would be equally interesting, if not even more so (IMO) because the Professor realizes the delicate balance of 'sanity' on the little island and the personalities of the three women. I'm sure he would struggle with making the right choice, but I can't help but think that he might have come to the same conclusion as Gilligan.

However, just supposing...
-He would take the easy way out and disqualify Mr. Howell on something technical, thus saving Lovey's personal feelings.
-He would maybe give his vote to MaryAnn because I think he realizes how trying it must be for MaryAnn to live in the shadows of Ginger's 'spotlight'. And Ginger would most likely express her feelings and get over it, somewhat, where as MaryAnn would keep quite and live with this constant feeling of being 'second rate' with possible more serious repercussions in the future.
-However, the Professor's true vote (whether outspoken or not) would go to Ginger. If he did infact cast his vote for MaryAnn, I think he would eventually go to Ginger, explain the situation and reason it out to her. Possibly, he would see it as an opportunity to express his true feelings... or something completely corny as such.

Ha, Ha, just suppossing, but it would make an interesting fanfic!

Does it not appear as though she and Gilligan are having actual conversations? His rapport with animals gets more extraordinary all the time!

This story is very similar to the ancient Greek myth about the Judgement of Paris, where the Trojan prince must decide whether Hera, Athena or Aphrodite is the most beautiful. (And don't our "Miss Castaways" fit those archetypes wonderfully?) He chooses Aphrodite, and the vengeance of the two losers is to cause the Trojan war. Gilligan comes up with a far wiser solution!

True - but absolutely hilarious, with those two educated, grown men acting like naughty little boys. I hope Ginger made them pay.

Hah! Wicked Gilligan and Professor! I hope Mary Ann made them pay.

This always seemed to me to be primarily a competition between the men, not the women. Look at the Skipper gloating: "I guess we know whose girl is going to win!" I don't know that Gilligan would be that competitive, expecially when the feelings of the women were at stake. I can't imagine him, for instance, putting glue on the stage or blowing pepper or spit-balls at the competitors.
