Happy Days went from classic show (better than any 'Seinfeld' or MASH' etc seasons) to just 'very good' show when they stopped using the 'Rock Around the Clock' theme song. It then went from 'very good' to 'above-average' around the time that Chachi hopped on board (whether it was actually Scott Baio himself who was or wasn't at fault for this). What then put HD into a sudden, super-rapid downward spiral to becoming arguably the worst TV show ever, was when Ron Howard and Donny Most left after the '79/'80 season. From there, it is extremely safe to say that Happy Days was WORSE than, say, 'Charles in Charge'.
What COULD have easily prevented this - breathed new life into the show - was if the producers would have utilized Robert Pierce as 'Bingo' to replace Ralph Malph as the show's comic reliever instead of wasting him on the spinoff, 'Joannie Loves Chachi'. Yes, I know it's often times better to replace an important character with one who is totally different (ex. Kirsty Ally replacing Shelly Long in 'Cheers') but sometimes there are exceptions, and this certainly would have been one of them. Being cut from the same comedic cloth as Donny Most, Robert Pierce would have definitely not only kept the show afloat through '83/'84 with sheer comedy, but I feel that HD's ratings would have been so good because of this that the show may have still been around in the late'80s or even early'90s! Robert Pierce is an extremely funny man! Yes, very much so in the vein of DM but with his VERY OWN STYLE as well which would have DEFINITELY made the difference! Actually, Joannie Loves Chachi probably should not have even been a show to begin with. Simply have the HDs '82/'83 season shift back and forth from Milwaukee to Chicago. I am a true believer in this. If you want to see for yourself just how funny a man Robert 'Bingo' Pierce is, go check these out...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=664m4MDYsWc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIjRom1oQUE Yes, he DEFINITELY should have been on more than just one measily HD ep. He could have and should have came on as a regular after 'Ralph' left. |

While we are on the topic of different twists and turns that this show took over the years, let us talk about another development that took place towards the end. The premise that I am thinking of is the addition of the Fonz's steady girlfriend Ashly. If I spelled her name wrong I am sorry! What do people think of his character going out of the dating circulation and becoming like a father figure to Heather?

the A-Team is what killed Happy Days, ABC tried making all sorts of goofy changes but I don't anything could've saved them once that show became such a hit.

I really disliked the Bingo character.
I think that if the writing had been better in, say, seasons 7-10, the show could have lasted beyond an eleventh season. The writing was great in that last season, but, by then, it was too late as the viewers had already given up. |

I didn't look at the clips, but I've seen every episode of Joanie Loves Chachi and the episode of Happy Days he was in, and I just find the Bingo character really annoying. The stupidity and spaced-out stuff just doesn't work for me. I agree that Happy Days could have lasted longer than it did, but it wouldn't have been because of the Bingo character had he been added as a regular. To me, he was nothing like Ralph Malph.

Bingo was no Ralph Malph, if anything he reminded me of the cook on Three's A Crowd (the Three's Company continuation series) - E.Z. the burned-out surfer dude.
I have seen all the HD and JLC episodes, the Bingo character was a one-trick pony and certainly couldn't have saved Happy Days OR made the Fonz character take a back seat in any way. |

I have to gracefully disagree. I think Happy Days was well out of steam by the time it ceased production in 1984. It was never the same after Ron Howard and Don Most left, plus magically transforming the decade from the 50s/60s to the 70s/80s didn't help, either. Would it have killed them to keep the period flavor??

One thing that I would still like feedback on is peoples' ideas about the addition of the Fonz's steady girlfriend in the second to last season. What do people think of him becoming like a father figure to her daughter? Do any of you have any ideas as to why the termenated her character for the last season?

What makes this Lakers analogy all the more ironic is that Magic came onboard the '79/'80 season (goodbye Richie & Ralph) and my projected end of Bingo-included HD is the '87/'88 season - the last year 'Showtime' won the title. Pretty funny. |

Are you at all familiar with the spin-off sereis known as "Joanie Loves Chachi"? In this sereis Bingo was the drummer in the band in which Chachi was the lead singer. I am not sure, but I think that I remember the episode of "Happy Days" that he appeared in that the other posters are writing about. There was one episode in which the Fonz pulled some strings to get the band an audition with a very reputable record company. The whole band appeared in this episode including the character of Bingo.
