Movie "Mother's Day" Remake Coming to DVD/Blu-ray March 8th

Darren Bousman Directed Mother's Day Gets Greenlit!
Friday, May 8, 2009
By: MrDisgusting

Testify! Some pretty huge news comes just in time for Mother's Day as Twisted Pictures, the Genre Co. and Rat Entertainment have lined up a financing deal with LightTower Entertainment to remake Charles Kaufman's 1980 Troma cult classic Mother's Day. Darren Lynn Bousman, who has helmed three films in the Saw franchise and the culty horror-musical Repo! The Genetic Opera, is attached to direct from a script by Scott Milam! Read on for all the juicy details.

The original "Mother's Day" revolved around three female friends who, while camping, run afoul of two brothers who engage in murder and rape to impress their deranged mother. The remake sees the villainous family return to the house where they grew up and terrorize the new owners and their guests.

"We're taking the iconic image of a mother, the most comforting and nurturing person in the world, and perverting that into something that is punishing and sadistic," Genre's Richard Saperstein said.

He added that the remake will be timely, reflecting today's foreclosures and tough economic times. "She's lost her house," Saperstein said. "Her boys are going to get it back to her."

Saperstein is producing with Genre's Brian Witten. "Saw" producers Mark Burg, Oren Koules and Carl Mazzocone also are producing, as are Brett Ratner and Jay Stern through Rat Entertainment.

LightTower partners Jonathan Zucker and Curtis Leopardo are executive producers on the project. Kaufman and Troma Entertainment co-founder Lloyd Kaufman also will exec produce, as will Genre's Stephen Kessler. Shara Kay will co-produce. Jessie Rusu is an associate producer.

The producers are eyeing a July start and a spring release timed for Mother's Day 2010.

Saperstein acknowledged that many horror movies are seeing their tone informed by last year's surprise hit "The Strangers." He said the tone of the "Mother's Day" remake "will be post-'Strangers' in that is has very realistic qualities but has a high-concept overlay, this punishing maternal figure."

I have to see this movie.

The original was sooo cheesy and stupid; I don't know if they will do that the same way or make it "more serious" for the remake.

I don't think the original was stupid at all, it was one of the most entertaining exploitation flicks to come out of the early 80's. And of course it was cheesy it was from the Kaufman brothers.

We'll probably get a needless backstory to Queenie, or they'll leave her out totally.

The original was fun because it wasn't meant to be serious, a more realistic tone will make it into another boring remake like The Last House On The Left.

The very first time I saw this movie, I rented it on VHS with a friend from high school from the local video rental. We just fast-forwarded to the death scenes.

I watched it again maybe a couple of years ago and it was 'entertaning' but I wouldn't say one of the best exploitation flicks.

We'll see how they work with the remake, but hopefully they won't "go serious" on it.

This has turned into a rental for me. Hollywood is more concerned with getting as many popular pretty faced actresses, most likely the film will be watered down and PC. Too bad all this wasted money wasn't given to Lloyd Kaufman's brother so he could make his once planned follow up to Mother's Day...then again he didn't need a Hollywood budget to make an entertaining film. Next we'll get a PG-13 remake of The Toxic Avenger- shouldn't have said that, I just gave Hollywood an idea....

I guess Alexa's starting to ditch kid movie roles.

Yet More Mother's Day Casting...
Thursday, September 3, 2009
By: BC

How many people are in this movie anyway?

Even without reading a synopsis, the sheer number of actors being hired (with more to come!) should tell you that Darren Bousman's "remake" of Mother's Day is a completely different beast, as that film only had like six people in it.

Well now you can add another name to the list: Bousman just announced via his Twitter page that AJ Cook has joined the cast as well. You might remember her as the heroine from Final Destination 2.

She joins previously announced Rebecca DeMornay, Lyriq Bent, Briana Evigan, Alexa Vega, Jaime King, Matt O'Leary, Shawn Ashmore... and I think a dozen others. But hey, more characters = more kills, right? Sweet.
