The NY Jets Intrested in Signing Plaxico Burress....Should Be Available in 2012

One reason the Jets’ call to Plaxico Burress’s agent last week is so titillating: Despite all the excitement surrounding the team’s acquisition of quarterback Mark Sanchez, they did not do anything about finding him someone to throw the ball to. For now, Sanchez’s best option is Jerricho Cotchery.

On Monday the Jets had nothing new to say about Burress, but that is nearly as important as what General Manager Mike Tannenbaum said in a statement Sunday night that confirmed his conversation with the agent Drew Rosenhaus.

Although an N.F.L. official familiar with the Jets’ thinking emphasized the call was strictly “exploratory and routine,” the Jets have pointedly not killed the speculation about their interest, the way they quickly did when receiver Terrell Owens was on the market. That, the league official pointed out, “leaves it open.”

The last time Tannenbaum was thought to be doing nothing more than due diligence (his pet phrase), the object of the due diligence alighted on New York in the form of Brett Favre.

Still, that does not mean Burress will be in Florham Park, N.J., anytime soon. His legal matter has not yet been resolved, as his lawyers try to negotiate a deal that will allow him to limit or avoid prison time for felony weapons charges.
