Thumbs up "Wolverine" Slashes His Way To The Top This Weekend *Updates*

Friday Report: Wolverine Rages on First Day
by Brandon Gray
May 2, 2009

On Friday, X-Men Origins: Wolverine kicked off the summer movie season with an estimated $35 million on approximately 8,300 screens at 4,099 locations. That ranks as the 16th highest-grossing opening day ever (and 22nd when ticket-price inflation is factored). The gross includes nearly $5 million from its first midnight shows at around 2,000 sites.

Compared to past summer season first days, Wolverine was the fourth biggest, behind Spider-Man 3, Spider-Man and Iron Man, which garnered $35.2 million on the same Friday last year (not including $3.5 million in Thursday night previews). X2: X-Men United comes in fifth with $31.2 million, although, adjusted for ticket price inflation, it would rate a bit higher than Wolverine with over $37 million. Based on the patterns of past similar movies, Wolverine is headed for an over $80 million weekend.

The romantic comedy that counter-programmed Wolverine had a relatively soft start. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past barely made more than Made of Honor on the same Friday last year, grossing an estimated $5.8 million on around 3,800 screens at 3,175 locations. In terms of attendance, it was the weakest opening day yet for a Matthew McConaughey romantic comedy, paling compared to Fool's Gold's $7.5 million and Failure to Launch's $8.5 million among others. Should Ghost of Girlfriends Past perform in the same vein as past titles, it will wind up with a $15-16 million weekend.

The other nationwide debut, Battle for Terra, pulled in about a quarter of a million dollars at 1,162 sites. That was double the opening day of Delgo, which had nearly a thousand more theaters, but a fraction of Fly Me to the Moon, which had less than half the theaters. Battle for Terra has a shot at $1 million for the weekend in what will be one of the worst openings ever for a computer-animated feature. It was no match for Monsters Vs. Aliens, which made an estimated $1.3 million on Friday, its 36th day.

Following its impressive debut last week, Obsessed tumbled 63 percent to an estimated $4.2 million on Friday, ranking third. A big drop was always in store for the thriller, and its total grew to $39 million in eight days. 17 Again continued to track in line with 13 Going on 30 and grossed an estimated $2 million for $44.1 million in 15 days. Meanwhile, The Soloist, Fighting and Earth lost traction in their second Fridays.

We'll see if Wolverine can keep up after Star Trek debuts on Friday. Good numbers for Wolverine and imo it was better than X3: The Last Stand.

I'm going to see Wolverine tonight. I admit I saw the workprint released online and I was pleased with it. I want to see how the finalized version is.

I'm also debating to either see Fighting or State of Play after; I'll see what I want to do when I get there.

Wow that documentary called Earth is doing nicely!

And Wolverine's big test now is how much of a dropoff it will see next weekend due to word of mouth and the next big release.

The X Factor: Ticket Sales Fall Off
5 May 2009 2:34 AM, PDT

Ticket sales for X-Men Origins: Wolverine fell off more steeply on Sunday than 20th Century Fox executives had expected.

The result was that the movie ended up with a total of $85.1 million versus the $87 million that the studio had estimated. The result also meant that the overall box-office finished a tad behind the comparable week last year, when Iron Man opened with $98.6 million, making it only the third week this year that sales were not significantly above last year's.

Coming in second was the debuting romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, starring Matthew McConaughey, which took in $15.4 million.

The only other film to open wide, Battle for Terra 3-D, took in just $1.1 million, to open twelfth.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):

1. X-Men Origins: Wolverine, 20th Century Fox, $85,058,003
2. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Warner Bros., $15,411,434,
3. Obsessed, Sony, $12,052,151, 2 Wks. ($46,854,485)
4. 17 Again, Warner Bros., $6,361,358, 3 Wks. ($48,503,817)
5. Monsters Vs. Aliens, Paramount, $5,803,429, 6 Wks. ($182,407,971)
6. The Soloist, Paramount, $5,654,558, 2 Wks. ($18,162,696)
7. Earth, Disney, $4,340,235, 2 Wks. ($22,004,284)
8. Hannah Montana: The Movie, Disney, $4,164,185, 4 Wks. ($70,946,323)
9. Fighting, Universal, $4,011,465, 2 Wks. ($17,344,805)
10. State of Play, Universal, $3,715,980, 3 Wks. ($30,944,180).
