Smile Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles To Celebrate 25 Years

Crime fighting amphibians the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will celebrate their 25th birthday on Thursday with a series of events in New York City.

Organizers of the city's Tribeca Film Festival are throwing a special bash for the turtles, who first appeared in a comic book back in 1984.

The Empire State Building will shine with a green light for the day, and the 1990 Ninja Turtles movie will be screened at downtown Manhattan's World Financial Center - which will be turned into the sewer set of the film.

And festival organizers are inviting fans to attend the party dressed like Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Rafael and Donatello - in a bid to break the Guinness World Record for the Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Ninja Turtles. The record was set last April with 786 people - organized by students of Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Who didn't love Master Splinter? He was like a cross between Mr. Kesuke Miyagi from Karate Kid and Uncle Jesse Duke from Dukes of Hazzard.

You know I've never thought about Splinter quite that way before. But the more I think about your description the more it makes sense. I can see elements of both Mr. Miyagi and Uncle Jesse in Splinter.

I still love the Ninja Turtles. I recently found a set of figures of Donatello,
Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Raphael, and (my favorite) Splinter at Family Dollar
for only $1.50 each.

I probably had a chance to buy the first issue of the comic book, with their very first appearance, at cover price. Now I feel like an idiot for not getting a copy back then. I remember seeing the cover (1st printing!) and noticing right away that the design was taken from Frank Miller's Ronin mini-series for DC. But there were so many new fly-by-night, small press black & white comic books coming out at the time that I couldn't have imagined TMNT characters lasting so long into the future.

So I do have the issues of Ronin, which are not worth much at all...
